It's likely product code 102516 which was a 2" 64-4 round butt DA only with bobbed hammer. Jim |

It would be a .38 Military & Police. When S&W began using model numbers starting ~1957 it would become the model 10 if it's all steel or a model 12 if it had an aluminum frame. The other numbers are assembly/inspector numbers. Jim |

I have a Smith and Wesson 32 top break hammerless revolver from my grandfather. He was a Army Captain in the OSS during WW II, working with partisans and counter-insurgency. He apparently took this off a German officer, along with a awesome Walther PP... the S & W must have been the officer's CCW weap. Anyways, appears to be in remarkable decent condition and was wondering about manufacturing date and value.
Serial number is 4903x Also has a bunch of patent dates stamped on top of barrel (dating from 1880 to 1885). Any info would be greatly appreciated... Last edited by globalhead; April 11, 2016 at 03:09 PM. |

I'm not really up on values of antique guns but the book (as of 2006) shows anywhere from $200 in good to over 1K in as new. Jim http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/d...swstandard.jpg |

My apologies, Jim, for the scant info. This is what I think (but don't know):
I believe it to be a 45 Hand Ejector Model of 1917. It is a commercial model (with S&W medallions and no military markings), not Brazilian contract, and made sometime prior to the hammer block addition. It is stepped to headspace the .45ACP and should also chamber the .45RIM. No moon clips were offered with it and it has no lanyard ring (although the hole is there for it). It is an interesting gun, to me, so I paid the asking price and took it home. I had time to take only one pic. It is marked DA 45 on the right side of the barrel, S&W etc, with patent marking on the top of the barrel, and Smith & Wesson on the left side of the barrel. The underside of the barrel (under the ejector rod) is marked with the serial number and, separate from the serial number, but nearby, a diamond with an S. All serial numbers match; frame (marked on the butt), cylinder, and barrel. There is no prefix. Don't know when it was made (although probably sometime between 1938 and 1948) nor what the value might be (which interests me for long-term collector status and support for my wife, if I decide to cross over before she does ). So, I would be interested in learning what I could about it. Addendum: There are some quite tiny markings on the frame under the crane where later model numbers were placed. I haven't yet been able to read them. Thanks, again. Will Last edited by psyfly; April 12, 2016 at 02:36 PM. |

psyfly,
It is a Model 1917. The first run made for the military ran from SN 1 in 1917 to ~169959 in 1919. The first Brazilian run in 1938 involved SN's 181983 to 207043. The book shows serial number 180445 shipped in Feb. 1929 so I would guess yours would be pretty close to that. Jim |

Thanks Jim. The model 36 is my birth year. It was meant to be. The hand ejector is also a target model. It looks rough but mechanically it's like new. Very tight lock up. Thankyou again.

Model 66. SN-K24xxx
Model 27-2. SN - N941xxx Any info is greatly appreciated. I'm guessing the 27-2 is at the end of the -2 era since it's not pinned. |

Model 27-2. SN - N941xxx = N9xxxxx range ran from 1982 to 1986. Your -2 would have been made right at the transition to -3 (1982/83). Some early -3's had pinned barrels or recessed chambers as well as late -2's with non pinned barrels or non recessed chambers. Jim |
