Greeting from sunny Florida. Although this is my very first post on this forum, I hope I can get a born on date for a Smith & Wesson Model 29-2 serial number N402XXX that is found on the butt of the pistol. Under the grips are stamped F3 and 535xx. What are these extra numbers? Could the second set of numbers refer to the five inch barrel?

I am familiar with Browning and Beretta date stamps and serial number data bases but Smith & Wesson remains a mystery to me.

N9xxxxx range ran from 1982 to 1986.
7K55xxx = 1975.

N4xxxxx range ran from 1977 to 1978.
The other numbers are assembly and inspector stampings.

I found this at our Family Civil-War farmhouse that was my wife's Grandmothers and now is ours.....

It's S&W 32 Long serial # is 32091 We think it is late 1800's to early 1900's

Sounds like a .32 Hand Ejector Model of 1903, 1st Change.
Serial Numbers ran from 19426 in 1904 to 51126 in 1906.

Just bought my first S&W revolver it's a 65-3 3" RB. SR# AEK9XXX Got it for 350. I think it was a decent deal, for a 30yr? old handgun it is in good shape. Great trigger. Do you guys think I got hurt any at that price?

Jim Tks....Yes got Box and Presentation box also. As I understood it, the SN CUM3800 was off the box and on the Gun near open wheel. The 6 was to mean 6.5 inch barrel which is what it is.. Dirty Harry's gun original was around 1974 was it not? Appreciate your efforts. Tony

Presentation box means it was likely part of a special run which might of had it's own serial number range. Usually, but not always, under the words "spec order" on the label there will be a four digit number. The first number will represent the year and the next three numbers the Julian date. Example: 7123 would mean the gun was boxed/shipped on the 123rd day of 1997.

Can't help with the manufacturing date but looking on Gunbroker, the asking prices seem to be over $1000 for nice ones. So methinks you dun good.

Jim Tks Have checked the Blue Box and there is no Special Order on it, and only shows SKu #, and S&W 6.5 inch, CUM3800 rifling is 5, also re-check the gun and found I was wrong on the Model Number info it says its a 29-10 not 29-6. How I got that wrong I will never know....lol The instruction book in the blue box says its copyrighted 2013....there is a number on the bottom of the label in between the bar code on left for price and bar code on left and it says 101513, so maybe that is the date sold or made??? Tks for the help..

the -1 started in 1960 at serial number 70000 and reached 135465 in 1969. So, somewhere around mid 1960's would be a safe guess. The model 34 was the same gun but with a shorter barrel. A miss-stamp.
And yeah, unless it's beat-up, that's a good price.

Makes a big difference and why the serial number doesn't show. The book only goes to 2006 and yours dates after that.

It's a Model of 1953 .22/32 Target (pre model 35). Serial numbers ran from 101 in 1953 to 135465 in 1969. Yours dates from around 1957, give or take a year.

I hate to do it but, where else can I turn. I traded for a 32 long revolver a few months ago and thought it was a J-frame 31-1, but recently comparing it to my 30-1 I noticed that the front sight was a blade not a ramp, and after some research it seems I have a Regulation police. The serial number is on the front of the strap and is 586xxx, I am guessing that makes it somewhere in the mid 50's but who knows. I have pictures but never have much luck posting them on most forums.
I do have them posted over at Marlin owners on a completely unrelated thread.

First of all, I want to introduce myself. I'm Scott and this is my first post on this forum. I joined to get more knowledgeable on all my guns and share my own knowledge the best I can. I have just acquired a used S&W 686-4 with a number engraved just behind the swing arm of the wheel - "BRN3458".

When I first purchased the revolver for $350 + 50 rounds of 158gn FMJ, it had a wood grip, which I really like. It's super classy and just looks plain old-school. But it's really bulky my hands are a little small to function on it properly. So I went and got an "upgrade" on the grip, a Hogue Monogrip, for a better handle on the tool while hunting in colder wet weather. That wood grip was just too slick to rely on while hunting in grizzly country... Yes, I use bear spray as my primary defense. Some say a .44 Mag or more powerful should be used, but this is better than nothing...

I also had a local leather smith custom make a holster that snaps to the outer left hip strap of my Badlands 2200 pack with a cross-draw configuration for hunting. He also put on a belt loop so that I could use it for a side draw if ever needed. It was fun brainstorming and working with him on that. I suggest trying it sometime with your local guy/gal.

... Which leads me to another question - for penetration through a bear using a .357 Mag, what round is most recommended? I purchased a box of Buffalo Bore 180gn flat-nosed rounds. I also have a box of Cor-Bon 200gn flat-nosed rounds.

I can't see the pictures over on that site unless I register.
That said, with the serial number stamped on the front strap it is a 32 Regulation Police. SN's ran from 536685 in 1948 to 826977 in 1991. Your guess of mid 50's is likely correct.

As for bear, I would load it with the heaviest non expanding bullet I could get. The 180 BB and 200 Corbon are good choices.
