Help with S&W third Gen

I have a friends 5906, but no magazine for it. I disassembled it including the frame to get rid of 15 years of carry junk. I reassembled it, and am sure that I have everything right except for possibly the mag safety. I had a Browning HP and the safety was just a little different than this one, best I recall. How does the lever that works the mag safety operate in relation to the hammer and sear? Can anyone provide a picture? I have looked on the internet and cannot find one. Also, does the mag safety lever go in front of or behind the spring steel in the back strap on the frame? I am just not really seeing how the mag safety disengages the sear when a mag is in.
