shotgun barrel
talking to a guy about trap shooting and he said that he shot so much that he wore out the barrel of his SKB trap gun. So my question is, is it really possible to wear out a shotgun barrel?

He is SO full of it.....................
No it is not possible to wear out a trap shotgun barrel........ My sporting O/U has over 300,000 through it. Dan Orlich, an ATA HOF member put over 1,000,000 through his Ljutic, serial number 1

A trap shooter ..that is full of BS....gee that is hard to imagine.
As FITASC says....its hard to even wear out a barrel lug...unless he is abusing the gun.../ I have a lot of Browning O/U's that are over 250,000 shells with no issues ....but I don't let them 'flop" open or "slam" them closed either.... Last edited by BigJimP; January 27, 2018 at 12:49 AM. |

so....you guys are telling me lugs don't wear out and that o&u's / sbs' don't loosen up? lol.
to the op.....you can wear out a shotgun and the area of the gun that your buddy was most likely explaining was the bbl lug or where the bbl meets the receiver. as a gun wears, the pivot lug or lock up system wears. an indicator is the release latch on top. as a bbl wears (or the bbl & lug system depending on the make of gun) the latch will slowly over time move to center of the gun. this is known as the 6 oclock. most new guns will have their latches far to the right or better known as or refered to as a 4 or 5 oclock. most likely, that's what he meant. wear and longevity of a bbl lug or the lock up on a gun varies from brand to brand. skb? skb's are mostly in the top 10 of well built guns. wear it out from typical use? possible...but most likely faster if abused. keep in mind, trap guns open and close MORE than a skeet gun. so most trap guns need to be and are built stronger. (lc smith, parker, Ithaca) some of them are 100 years old and still tight. and with minor tweeking, go another 100 years. skb? well, if a browning or krieghoff can wear out....an skb is certainly possible. I think your buddy was trying to say he wore out the lock up, not the actual tube the wad travels down. (figure of speech)

Agreed....
My elsie is celebrating it's 100th birthday this year and is tight as a tick.
Perhaps he was shooting steel shot through that full choke?

"...lugs don't wear out and that o&u's / sbs' don't loosen up..." That's not the barrel wearing out. One would suspect the trapist was exaggerating somewhat. Using poetic licence, if you will.
If you should feel like messing with him, suggest he should have bought a real trap gun. Stand back, 'cause his head might explode. snicker. SKB O/U Trap gun start at $900ish on Gunbroker. Used Brownings start at about $2500.

splitting hairs id say.
bbl lug is part of the bbl ASSY. I still say he was referring to wearing out his bbl as a figure of speech. I can take a worn bbl ASSY off a krieghoff with a little side slop, and put a tighter bbl ASSY on, and its tight. so...in comparison during a conversation with a novice, its very easy to say, this bbl unit is tight, and this one is worn.

he was talking about the barrels, I've always wondered where he came up with some of the things he says.

ricklins suggestion is now front and center. if you shoot steel shot in a gun not designed for steel shot....yes you can wear out a bbl tubes at the choke.
but if memory serves me right, skb's are chrome lined.

You can wear out the locking lugs of a break action single, double, or OU.
I had my Broadway tightened up by Browning after a LOT of shooting by me and the previous owner. A skeet shooter here said his SKB was on its third and largest pair of trunnions. When it next got sloppy, there were none enough oversize to fix it. On the other hand, a Krieghoff shooter was told that his gun could be rebuilt - other than finish - indefinitely. When I first saw it, it was quite loose, but $440 later and it was like new. |
