Rock Island 1903 Sporter

Hi all. There is one in an LGS for $400. After looking at prices I wonder if there is something wrong with it. In all honesty I know nothing of them and am just getting interested after seeing this one and reading about how well thought of they were in their day. Is this a common price for one that is I would say used, but generally good "service grade" condition. It has peep sights with a Redfield sight that looks possibly correct. I didn't take any good pics of as the LGS doesn't really permit that.

In general if I am looking for one of these what should I look for in a service grade shoot able rifle? I am assuming they take that same ammo as the Garand. This is .30/06 not .30/03. Thanks.

1. It has been heavily sporterized with commercial stock, commercial peep sight, high polish blue, and a WWII 1903A3 stamped trigger guard.
$400 sounds like a lot even if...

2. Serial number should be over 285,506 for improved heat treatment or above 319,920 for nickel steel receiver. "Low number" rifles are not considered safe at any price.

If you intend to take a class on sporterizing guns, it would be good for that. New barrel, make a stock, drill & tap for scope.
