Idea to make your rod better

I hit upon a great idea (at least I think so ) while cleaning my rifle this week.

Have you ever had the jag (I use tipton nickel plated) bang on the crown while pulling the rod back? Well I came up with a cheap easy fix.

Take a piece of Heat Shrink Tubing, put in on the rod over the metal to fiberglass interface if you have one (Tipton Rod) and shring it down with a lighter. It increases the diameter of the rod just enough to make the jag miss the crown but no so much as to scour the chemicals out of the barrel.

I use automotive grade heat shink tubing as this is chemical resistant.

Whoa, for a minute there, I thought this was spam. Gotta get my mind out of the gutter...

Anyway, glad I clicked through. That's a great tip. I'm always so worried about nicking the crown when cleaning my barrels. So much I've resorted to using bore snakes, but for the deep cleaning, you just have to use a good brush and rod.

cleaning

I don't run the jag out the barrel.
I push the brush until its at the crown.
Same with the jag.
Pull every thing out the chamber.

I use the Accupro jags that have an O-ring at the base. The O-ring has a larger diameter than the jag, so the metal doesn't bang the bore or muzzle.
