target plans

Purchased my first handgun (9mm), bought some dies, power, bullets, etc. Now I need to practice up. I am interested in welding up some metalllic targets and I am curious as to what type of targets are typically shot for automatic competition. Some plans would be great.

Not that I am an expert here, but I would think that if you have good skills with cutting/welding metals, you could make just about any type of target you would like and make them last a hella long time if you shot frangible.

I would think that 1/8" steel plate cut into any shapes you like would hold up perfectly well against frangible for a heck of a long time....

Bullseye shooters shoot at 6" bullseyes at 50 yards, 3" bulls at 25 yds. The whole target is bigger.

IPSC type targets are a rectangle with a square for a head.

For general use, a 12'x18' rectangle will do as a defensive target at any range you'd think to shoot.

For stands, I used to weld together rebar into a tripod arrangement with a "T" at the top. Then an "L" bracket on the back of the target to hang it on the tripod. But be inventive.

Oh, I wouldn't use anything less than 5/8" and heavier if I could get it. Metal either craters or holes with velocity. Heavier and tougher steel will resist this. You DO NOT want to shoot on a target with 'dimples'; they tend to return bullets. Beat them out flat or fill and grind.
