Scored some Ramshot Hunter

Powder Valley had it and I jumped on it. My initial look at available data had me concerned that it would be a duplicate of the IMR-4955 I took a chance on, but further investigation says no. I use QuickLoad for a lot of powder comparisons. Between that and my initial chrono data from IMR-4955, the Enduron powder seems to run between Re-19 and -22. Not a bad thing at all, and it looks like it will be useful in most of my Re-19 loads. (I found some Re-15 a couple weeks ago, but mostly no luck on Alliant powders.) Hunter advertises as close to IMR-4350, just a touch faster than Re-19. But the published data and QL are telling me it might be a good replacement for Re-17, which I use in a number of rifles. We shall see. Now, if I could only find some primers.

Tried your LGS or even local big chain for primers? Some are showing sporadically here locally. I got a text last eve that the local SW would be putting primers on the shelf this morning with a limit of 2 sleeves per person. Another independent LGS has them on the shelf sporadically at stupid high prices. Online Brownells has been dropping primer off and on this week but they go really fast. Things seem improving though. More powders hitting the net and staying up longer

Hunter is a favorite powder of mine. Especially good for progressives, or if you don't want to hand weigh, as it meters great. I typically get single digit SDs with it.

My experience with it in the 270Win is that it is almost identical to H4350.

I've tried Hunter in my 257 Roberts, 284 Win & 280 Rem.
Not bad. Decent accuracy. Not the highest velocities, but i prefer accurate anyways.
I mostly use it in the 284 Win now.

If you can find it, Alliant PP4000MR is proving exceptional in the above mentioned cartridges.

Bought some. My version of QL doesn't have it, but I'm sure I will find plenty of load data. US made powder, whereas the Reloder series I am fond of is all Swedish.

While the charge weights will be different, I found the end results were pretty much the same as H4350 in 30-06 and 6.5 CM.

I still prefer H4350 since I've used it long enough that I'm familiar with it and like the results I get. But if H4350 were unavailable I'm sure I could find a comparable load with Ramshot Hunter.

I agree, you should only use H4350 and stop talking about Hunter.

Could it be that some of the powder makers (and Ramshot and IMR are Hodgdon brands now) are trying to wean us off some of the old standby powders in favor of their newer products? It's working on me, if that's what they're up to. I have more load workups going than I have in a long while. And I read that Alliant won't share data on their 4000-MR with the QuickLoad publisher. Bummer!

Actually the charge weights are identical, as a bit of trivia. 54gr of either H4350 or Hunter gives me 3000fps with a 130gr Hornady Interlock out of a 24" barrel - plus minus 20fps.

I started using Hunter because it was "good enough" and available. H4350 has been hit or miss for the last 5 years plus.

let us know how it works out. I want try some various substitutes as I start to use up what I have left of my H4350 and Varget. I have noticed a lot of the old standbys are coming back more often though. Last week PV I had 5 pounds of H4350 and 5 pounds of Varget in my cart but decided not to pull the trigger on it and backed out to leave it for those who truly need it

I now have 3 new to me powders, although they have all been out for a few years: Ramshot Hunter, IMR-4955, and Alliant 4000-MR. Yesterday I had two of them at the range with my LabRadar.

First 30-06 (Ruger No. 1 26"). I had data from Ramshot, and ended up 1% below their max:

Not bad. I have Federal data for 4000-MR that I need to try for comparison. IMR-4955 (Hodgdon data) was considerably slower. The anti-magnum folks should like this data; that long barreled Ruger is acting sort of magnum like!

I also had a 243 out (Ruger American 22"). For this one I'm outside the lines, so no details, but I did get good velocity and Std performance out of IMR-4955. Shooting some 100 gr seconds (look like Hornady), my groups were not great. I will try some GameKings. But what I am really anticipating is a workup with 80 gr TTSX. I have good loads with Re-17 and Re-19, and Barnes data for both Hunter and 4000-MR. Great chance to compare.
