It'll be interesting to see pictures. The only thing that comes to my mind is possibly a re-barreled Mauser. I'm thinking all US manufacturers had a tendency to put identifying info on the rifles at least somewhere.
If it is a Mauser though... that's not even half the mystery. There were so many of them made in and for so many countries in both large ring and small ring configurations.

The number 79 on the floor of the receiver is not a model number. You really need to post some pictures. Does sound like a sporterised milsurp that is most likely a K98 Mauser.

Don't Mauser's have some sort of engraving on the receiver's? Usually on top? My 1895 and 1908 models did. Yep, pictures.

"...Mauser's have some sort of engraving..." Some have country crests. Others have the place and year of manufacture. All milsurps rifles will have proof marks and acceptance stamps all over 'em. Professionally sporterised milsurps usually do not.

Sounds like a sporterized surplus that the gunsmith scrubbed all the ugly proof marks, manufacturer's mark, and national crest off of.
But keep trying on pictures. |

Just a side note- any "official" serial number in a US-made or import gun after 1968 would be on the receiver, not the barrel.

Photos have to be hosted. You can't load them directly from the computer. Email them to me I'll post them for you.

I post pictures all the time from my computer. There is a paperclip looking icon at the top of the message box you are typing in next to the smiley looking thing. Click on that and you can retrieve photos from whatever file you have them stored in. I have never had a hosting service.
