Coonan Classic buffalo bore 125 grain results.

Many of you may know I am some what of a Coonan fan boy. I love the 357 magnum round and I love 1911s so when I heard of the Coonan I jumped on board.

Well my newest addition to the Coonan is a 6 inch hunter barrel for it.


as you can see the barrel sticks out of the end of the slide a bit. Any way this got me thinking. I wonder how fast it shoots ammo. I have tested lots of rounds and I knew the Coonan was fast. I finally decided to test the hottest factory rounds I am aware of. These are the high velocity buffalo bore 125 grain JHP. The factory claims 1700 FPS from a 6 inch barrel revolver.



After getting the ammo I took it out to the back woods to gets some numbers. I shot 5 shots over my chronograph I got pictures of 4 of the five shots (still trying to figure out my new camera phone)

for an average speed of 1798.6 FPS and a difference of 33 fps from the fastest and slowest shot. That is just under 900 foot pounds of energy (897 to be exact).


The recoil was actually not as bad as what I expected. It was only slightly worse than my hand loaded 158 grain bullets

as you can see the Coonan is a pretty hot pistol. It is pretty heavy so that does take a lot of the recoil out of it. The gun is more accurate than I am.

But any way you slice it 900 foot pounds of energy is pretty good in a semiauto. I smiled after every round was fired.

Interesting to see the actual results. Unlike some ammo manufacturers out there, Buffalo Bore is known for their honest velocity figures. How do the snakeskin grips actually feel shooting? IIRC, Sarge43 (of The Finer Grain) has a Coonan.

I love the snake skin. so far they seem plenty durable. I have put about 2000 rounds through the gun with these grips with very little wear. The grips are very "grippy" easy to hold on to.

Well, I just have happened to have shot the 180 BBs out of my 6 inch Security Six over a chronograph. And out of this particular Ruger specimen I get an average of right around 1,450 fps; BB lists 1,400. (See above picture of the side of the box; 180 listed at the top.) My Security Six has a pretty tight cylinder gap; .002 to .003 on all six.

mine does pretty well. out side of cci shot shells it feeds well. I did load some subsonic 230 grain bowling pin bullets for it that it did not feed well untill i sped them up a little bit.

I see you have a 6 inch barrel. Yours is the only one I have seen of the new Coonans with a 6 inch barrel. Is that an option? I am looking to get a Coonan but For where I am going to take it hunting I require a 6 inch barrel.

Those are pretty impressive numbers. I would like to see how the hottest 10mm would do energy wise from the same 6 inch barrel?

The Barrel can be ordered for a bit extra from the factory. Just ask for it.

As far as how it compairs to the 10mm... honestly I have no idea. I did not get this gun to be a super power gun, I got it to match my collection. I only own guns in 22, 357 magnum, 45-70 Govt and 12ga (though my wife does not follow these rules) As you can see finding a semiauto handgun in one of those calibers is hard.

I found out to late. When you order the pistol upgrade to the 6" for about
$99. If you don't and order it seperately it will be $200.

I love mine and it shoots great.

I could be wrong, but I think that's in the vicinity of the FN 5.7X28mm velocity.

Sorry to bump an old thread but the topic came up of 357 magnum vs 10mm and I wanted to show what a 357 magnum is capable of doing.

I bought my Coonan with a 6 inch barrel but I am still waiting.

Very nice, roughly an extra 100 fps over claimed velocity. If that held true with the other Buffalo Bore loads, I'd expect that 180gr hardcast to be doing 1475-1500 fps!! I'm really diggin' that Coonan!
