My pick for that price range would be SW1911 TFP.

You guys have shown me the light! It has to be a Colt... at least for now. There are a number of quality 1911's on the market, and I hope to own one of each someday... But my first 1911 will most likely have a pony on it.
Now to begin the search! I'm sure there will be more questions to follow...

I have two 1911s, a S&W (an older one, not the E series) and a Sig Tacops, both purchased for slightly more than $800. The Sig came with 5 magazines and a free Sig holster. The Tacops I have is the traditional model, with the normal 1911 slide profile and a rail, although they make the same gun without a rail. It came with excellent night sights, an extended magwell, and a number of other features found on more expensive guns.
I can't tell you how pleased I have been with the fit, finish and performance of the Sig. Not so crazy about the quality of the S&W -- I had to send it back to S&W because of consistent FTE issues. I've handled and fired colts at the range and liked them a lot but can't say more than that. You should at least check the newer Sig 1911 line out. In my limited experience, the newer Sig 1911s are the best value in this price range and seem to be easier to come by than Colts. |

I agree that in this price point, Sig is probably the best choice. But he's got his heart set on a Colt. I wouldn't be surprised if his second is a Sig. Just like my second will probably be a Colt since my first was a Sig

That's pretty much what I did... Sig 1911 Nightmare, and trips and trips and trips to the half dozen walmarts in a 100 mile radius. 100 round Federal value packs for 30 bucks.

My first 1911 is a Colt and I'm very happy with my purchase. Not knowing a whole lot about 1911, I got a lot of reassurance from 1911 addicts that I made a good choice

I cant encourage you enough to save just a few more bucks for a Dan Wesson Heritage, or a Valor if your patient.
Incredibly nice pistols to say the least... |

Ah! I didn't realize you were a leather maker. In that case, I retract my recommendation and vote Sig!

SA milspec or GI and save the rest for bulk ammo and possible trigger upgrades (my milspecs trigger was hard to beat stock) if you feel the need.

I live in Massachusetts. Looking to purchase a full size Kimber 1911 from a private party here in this state.

Welcome to The Firing Line, Dan1911! You might have better luck if you posted a WTB (Wanted to Buy) ad down in the classified section.
