They are or were night sights. I am sure that they no longer glow, mine didn't. You can buy paint to fix them though.

[Someone posted that the
SKS is easier to take down and reassemble than an ak. I would respectfully submit that the only thing easier to take down and reassemble than an AK is a Velcro shoe strap |

Have you ever field stripped an SKS? I'd say they're about equal.

Those sights originally had tritium inserts, back in 196x. They've long since dimmed. You cannot legally buy the luminescent paint, just phosphorescent paint, which requires a temporary charge from a bright lite. On my AK, which shares the same kind of front post as an SKS, I have a Meprolight AK 47 tritium front post, for about $55.

Yes the paint is phosphorescent and is charged by light. The green lasts the longest & brightest of the colors, but will dim gradually over about 1/2-1 hour. It goes on as a opaque color. I've used on some other sights , but not my yugos. I haven't checked on dark yet to see if any life left yet. Going to try cleaning then to see if that helps any

Why is luminescent paint illegal? think I can find the other one at Home Depot or something? It'd be convenient cause I plan on getting some stain and refinishing the stock

Radioluminescent paint contains radioactive isotopes like radium or, today, tritium or promethium. The tritium and promethium ones are still legal, as unlike radium, they're not harmful unless you swallow a fair amount of them. They're not as bright as people want, though. The tritium sights you can buy for guns have glass tubes filled with tritium gas, so you have a whole lot more glowing molecules to put out light than a layer of paint can hold. Tritium paint on sights would barely be noticeable except in extreme darkness. The photoluminescent stuff is just so much brighter it's no contest.

I bought my Yugo just before Christmas 2012, I was relatively new to the semi-auto rifle world and had heard through friends that this was a really reliable, easy to take care of rifle that with a good bore, will serve up fun for a long time.
But, seeing that I'm a tinkerer, and that it was a non-numbers matching rifle I bought a SGW Bullpup kit and turned it into my SHTF go to. I had the spring and bolt carrier modified for the "slam fire" issues and the trigger group replaced by Murray's..next will be chopping the barrel to remove some weight. I can't wait to fire it in this configuration. Needless to say, they are an easy weapon to work on and shoot...Good luck!!! |

Garycw, does that paint permenantly fade after the amount of time stated next to each product or does it just need to be recharged with light then?
Easy, that gun is sick man that conversion must've cost more than the gun itself.. |

No,not permanent. It will recharge with light over and over. The green is pretty bright. That's the only color I would use. I think on there website it states the green is good for gun sights.

Sweet cause I can buy like 8 of these guns for what a gallon of that stuff costs . I'm gonna have to order some of that and probably use it on some of my other guns too. Thanks for that link, you just made me feel even safer at night lol
And thank you all for answering my never ending questions, I've learned a lot in a short period of time with your help. Now I just need to find an outdoor range near Gwinnett county GA so I can see what I'm capable of. I've shot the sks one time so far at my lgs/indoor range and within the 25 yds allotted I was keeping 2-3" groups with these 30 rd mags and tho this may not be very impressive keep in mind this the first rifle I've ever shot and I've only been shooting (handguns) since November last year. I do love going to practice tho so ill be getting better in no time |

If this is your 1st rifle, do yourself a HUGE favor and buy a .22lr rifle. You can do well for not a lot of money with a Marlin model 60 or 795. You don't have to shoot a centerfire rifle to be a rifleman, but rifleman definitely shoot .22lr. A lot.

Seanc, too late I already bought it 2 weeks ago. And I have my next several guns picked out too. Ak 47, ar 15 rifle or carbine (eventually both), mossberg 500 20ga pistol grip, 12ga double barrel, a ss enhanced 1911, 1853? Army/ navy conversion open top revolver... If I find an outdoor range or some place for plinking ill include a 22lr rifle probably lever action. Bolt action isn't too lefty friendly. I have a 22 revolver and it shoots great but I don't shoot it as much as my other guns. I prefer a "BANG!!" to a "pop".
Easy, that is cheaper than I imagined, do I get to keep the bayonet on? Bull pup with a bayonet sounds pretty rad lol |

You could use a bayonet if you want but you couldn't fold it back unless you shorten the bayo.
