A reduced load in a 22-250

I have a Remington 700 in a 22-250. I wanted to make a reduced load where I can shot small game with out blowing them up. So went with a 45 gr. sierra SP, and did a work up for 4.0 gr to 5.5 gr. of 700X . Well the 5.5 gr was the best at 50 yds. a 3 shot group was .209". Looks like about 1400 FPS?? Looks like that will work.

Interesting... but it sounds like a 22LR should do the same thing cheaper, considering the ballistics you mention...

I think that is a lot of case volume for 4-5gr of powder and that there would be a high potential for squibs.

I don't know about reduced 700x loads so will refrain from commenting. Hodgdon Trail Boss is great for this type of thing. Take a look at the link.

The utility of such a load is for when going on a walking varmint or predator hunt and you don't want to pack two rifles but you want the flexibility to take something for the pot. At least I assume that is what the OP has in mind.

I don't know anything about the powder you chose, but I know H4895 makes a great powder for reduced loads. Might be a possibility as well for small game. I had thought about this as well when making a load for my daughter for her .223. One load for squirrel and rabbit and one load for deer or coyotes.

Well it work very good and it is no way that it could be a squib load.

Trail Boss is fantastic for this purpose.

I use it to load my 204, 32gr bullets at about 2,200fps.

Very quiet, literally sounds like a cap gun.

IMR SR 4759 ....... very accurate in .270 Win reduced loads.

Don't have a manual handy, but probably applicable for 22-250.

Then again, there is the .22 LR.
