removing copper fouling ?

What do you guys use to remove copper fouling from a rifle bore ? Is there any product you have found to work better than others ?

KG-12 -- literally eats copper -- better than anything I've ever found.

See test/article HERE

For me, its been shooters choice Aqua Clean. Will not say its the best product, but of the 4 or five bore cleaners I own, its my best.

Industrial strength ammonia cleans it better than anything but it will remove bluing instantly.

The military uses M-Pro7 products.

You probably know that some rifle barrels need a level of copper fouling to shoot well, others are doing their job again after a few fouling shots.

Mine are the latter, and I remove copper with every cleaning along with powder fouling; Wipe-Out foaming bore cleaner. Spray it into the bore, let it sit (overnight if very fouled), then patch it out. I'm lazy, and this stuff just plain works. Nothing else for the past three years.

Here's another recommendation for Wipe-Out as it cleans without scrubbing with brushes, works extremely well and doesn't have an odor.

+1 on the KG-12. My only complaint is that it is hard to get onto a patch (it runs off rather than soaking in).

When I found out that Boretech Eliminator was great for copper removal, I got some and used it. Yes, it's good stuff and I took all the copper out of most of my rifles. Then I found that a couple of them (not all of them) weren't shooting quite as well. So I shot em a while and then used Butch's Bore Shine for cleaning, which left some copper in the bore, and I got my accuracy back. Based on that accidental experiment, it does appear that some rifles need some amount of copper in the bore to shoot their best. That is what I presently think, though I honestly do not absolutely know that to be the truth. If I'm wrong, at least I'm comfortable in my ignorance.

And don't bother with the Sweets. If you want the copper out, the Boretech Eliminator will do it for ya. I hear that the KG-12 is even better, but I haven't tried it. Haven't needed it.

This.
I switched from KG-12 to M-pro 7 because of this but both work very well.
"M-pro 7 gun cleaner" is a mild copper & powder remover, "M-pro 7 copper remover" is a more agressive copper remover. Unlike Sweets both may be left in the bore for extended periods with no harm & have no strong smell either.

Most modern cleaners don't actually remove copper at all, the brush does that. However if you switch from an ammonia based product you won't get the "pretty green & blue flowers" on your patches. Both the M-pro & the KG 12 give a black, not green color when removing copper the blue/green is unique to ammonia. It doesn't mean they arent removing it, its just a different reaction with a different colored residue.

I have been using the M Pro 7but wanted something more for the copper fouling, so from you guys recommendations I am going to get a bottle of the M Pro 7 copper cleaner.
Thank you for the replies

I forgot to ask about a good lead remover for the guns I shoot lead bullets in. Does the standard M Pro 7 remove lead fouling ?

Good choice, you won't regret it.
Lead, no you scrub that out with the bore brush. I honestly dont know of a lead dissolving chemical.

Bore Tech Eliminator, and I have tried almost evrything out there... I will try to find the KG12, but the Eliminator works fine... I'm like 603, I don't need to remove ALL the copper from my bore, until accuracy suffers.

I used Hoppe's #9 Copper Solvent on my son's stainless T/C Encore .300 Win Mag bbl, after he shot about a million copper solids through it.

It didn't take very many passes, before patches came out clean, ILO blue-green.

Until I got the Boretech Eliminator, I thought that most of the copper was already removed from my rifle bores. I was very wrong. Plenty of copper left, but when I was finished with the Boretech, the copper was really gone. Beats the heck out of any ammonia based copper remover I've ever used, and I used a lot of em.

Well I've bought several "shot out" rifles that just had heavily fouled bores & a deep cleaning suddenly, miraculously restored the "ruined old" barrels.

Another BTE fan. You don't even need to brush the bore. You can leave it in overnight and no harm. It's the best I've used.

I've been happy with MPro-7 and Hoppes Elite, but the easiest ones are the foaming bore cleaners. Breakfree makes one that is pretty effective on copper fouling. They may not be as aggressive as some solvents, but they coat the bore better due to their foaming action which means that the solvent stays where it needs to be longer than with the liquid solvents.

The fact that they work without strong odors is a nice bonus.

Break Free-bore cleaning foam

I've become a big fan of the foams, the one above currenty, cause its available locally.

I clean the bore as per usual with std Hoppe's and brush and patches. Then I do a foam treatment, letting the rifle set 10-15 minutes. You will not believe what comes out of the rifle! I swab again, then do an overnight foam treatment, swabbing with Hoppes as a last step.

I could not get Hoppe's Copper to cut my ADL's fouling problem, and using it after a match on F-T/R rifle was a lot of work too. The foam has eliminated a lot of scrubbing!

Ran some foam through an old Garand........good grief!

The regular Hoppes no.9 works pretty good for me, even better than the Hoppes copper remover. For severe copper fouling I've used the the Hoppes and gunslick foam which works pretty good also.
