Diameter .357 and 9mm bullets
Are 357 and 9 mm the same exact diameter? Just wondering about the ruger blackhawk convertable abilty to shoot both. through the same barrel.

They are not the same diameter. 9mm is .355 so the rounds are going to be .356/357. the 357 are going to be .001/.002 larger as well. The ruger will be more accurate with one or the other.

Barrel dimension tolerances are such that there is a lot of overlap.
In the 70s we slugged about 200 duty guns. Approximately the same number each of Hi Powers and Model 39s in 9X19. Colt and S&W in .357Mag. Smallest bore in that lot was shared by all four at .354 and largest was also shared by all four at .359. Later found a Colt .357Mag at .3535. Your gun might favor one diameter while another from the same lot might favor a different diameter. Unless you are goin for bullseye bucks.....doesn't seem to matter. I think WESHOOT2 has found similar spread with far more recent guns. Sam |

YEP
Gotta KNOW; push a greased soft lead ball through the bore, and mike it. THEN you'll know (and can buy correct bullets).
Suggest .001" over bore size; lead or jacketed/plated.

9MM .357
The .357 mag and 38 special shoot 358 soft lead bullets and .357 jacketed bullets. The 9mm shoots 357 lead bullets and.356 jacketed bullets with some variability.
The exception is the old Colt Python that had a .356 diameter barrel that took .358 diameter soft lead 38-357 mag bullets and squeezed them down and spit them out very accurately.
