XDM Compact 3.8 Range Report

Earlier in the week I posted that I was considering picking up one of the new XDM Compact pistols. It didn't take much convincing, but after Hickok45 posted up his new video of the gun, I was sold.

Finally got to hit the range today with one of the 250 round boxes of Remington UMC from Wal Mart. I shot all 250 rounds over a course of about 40 minutes or so using my Uplula speed loader. I was more focused on performance of the XDM than really taking my time and focusing on accuracy. I had cleaned the XDM and oiled the rails with MPro 7 after I bought it.

Well, I must say that I am impressed with the gun. Recoil is minimal. The dremel-fitted XD pinky extension that I fit onto the short XDM magazine makes the gun fit perfectly in the hand. While still providing great concealability and comfort IWB.

At the range, the XDM did not disappoint. I shot all 250 rounds from varying distances as short as 21 feet/7 yards out to 75 feet/25 yards. I don't claim to be a marksman and I never really shoot at that distance. I primarily focus on 21-30 feet during normal range visits. For me, keeping my shots inside of a silhouette target at 75 feet is doing alright. With this XDM Compact I was able to keep 10-shot groups at about 8-9 inches from 75 feet standing, unsupported. For me, that's impressive... probably not for a lot of you guys.

I shot all rounds using only the single 13-round magazine and did not have a single FTF, FTE, Stovepipe, or any other failure or bobble of any kind from round one. By the end of my shooting, the gun was pretty darn hot! Overall, I really like this gun. The trigger is great. The reset could be a little better and there could be a little less take-up, but this is a carry gun for me, not a range-only performance gun. I have seen the results of the powder river trigger kits for the XDM's and they are very impressive with their reduction in take up, over travel, and reset length. I have considered ordering a kit... but I may wait it out. The stock trigger is very smooth. I think I'll keep this one around for a while.

Here's a few pics:

The gun after firing all 250 rounds.

The target... after all 250 rounds!
Note: This target was not the only one shot at. I hung up 2 other targets that were (mostly) lined up the same way. I just left this one on the back so it all of the rounds through it...

Does it come in .45 or 40 S&W?

Sorry, I didn't realize these were coming out.

I paid in the high $600's out the door. I did look on gunbroker and you can get one for about $600 shipped... but I'm not good with patience. So I bought locally and paid the tax. I'm happy with it so that's okay.

It does come in .40S&W.

.45's are not available yet... I assume they will probably make a .45 version, since I think the XDM .45 is doing pretty well. I'm happy with the 9mm.

According to the springfield rep I caught at my lgs doing a little training. An xdm 3.8 or xd subcompact in .45acp is not in the near future

I find these really appealing. I like glocks and M&P's too, but what really sets the xd's apart for me is the grip safety, which I really like. These would be great for carry.

I have a full-sized XDM in 9mm and have been really happy with it.

+1 Gents...I have a full sized XD-45 for home defense and carry from time to time, just gotta remove the tac light when I do carry it.

Love XD, should have been sold on it earlier.

Nice gun Malice, congrats...You will only love it more and more and more.

Agreed. Thanks guys.

Good looks, good ergos, good trigger. Not much to dislike about this gun.

I also happened to luck out today and find a guy that just got his 3 free mags and a holster from Springfield but didn't really want them. I offered him $50 and he happily accepted.. which is less than the cost of 2 new mags. Excellent.

Now I need to either pick up a couple more of the regular XD pinky extensions and do the dremel work on them or just wait for the real Pearce extensions to come out. Maybe I'll check and see if there's any update on availability of those.

Going to hit the range again tomorrow I think. I really like shooting this gun.

UPDATE:

I just called Pearce and spoke to them about the pinky extension for the XDM. I was told that they are in the final testing processes to verify the new products fit, finish and durability and that if all continues to go well they should be in full production as of March 28th.

She said to keep an eye on the website for availability or just try giving them a call back on the 28th or 29th to see what the status is but hopefully within the next month we should see them showing up.

I may go ahead and pick up another 1 or 2 of the XD ones to Dremel fit on the XDM magazines temporarily because I really like the feel with the extension.

Just an FYI for those of you who might be interested.

P.S. - If you have purchased one of the XDM compacts, don't be affraid to modify the XD extension. It's really easy. All you need is the sanding drum on the dremel and just go around the inside of the lip to make it a little wider and it will slide onto the XDM with no problem. There is a how to on XD Talk or something like that that I used.

Another Update:

Went to the range again today during lunch with a coworker. Put another 225 rounds through the XDM Compact without a single issue. 200 Rounds of WWB and 25 rounds of Federal Champion - both from Wal Mart.

We shot the gun rapid, single handed, limp wristed, etc. Could not make it fail a single time. This brings the total for this gun to 475 rounds in the week that I've owned it. Not 1 failure at all yet. I have a case of 124gr Eco being delivered tomorrow, so I will get started on that here later in the week probably.

Sounds like to me there's no way I'll ever be offered to buy your new "M"...

Haha. I'm constantly buying/selling/trading guns, with a few exceptions that have managed to remain permanent (P229 Stainless Elite/PPS/etc).

I really think this XDM Compact is one that will be staying for a while. I constantly analyze my guns to find something I dislike about it and really stew over that. The only things I'd like to change are to have it upgraded to night sights and MAYBE down the road I may play with the PRP Trigger kits, but stock trigger is pretty darn good, so that's definitely not a priority.

I would like Pearce to hurry up with the pinky extensions. I now have 6 flat mags, but only 1 has the pinky extension from the XD model with dremel work. I might do that for one or two more though.

I'm going to have to say she's a keeper though!

I was impressed by the reliability of the my XD(m) Compact as well.

I bought extra mags before my first trip to the range with it. So, I had four 13 round compact mags and two 19 round mags with the X-tension sleeves on them.

After loading the mags three times and one round in the pipe each time I went through 273 rounds in very short order. My loads were a whole mix of ammo: Magtech 115gr. FMJs, Magtech Guardian Gold 124gr JHP+Ps, Hornady TAPs, some Federal 147 FMJs, some my LRN reloads.

It never missed a beat, never jammed once. I was surprised because even my beretta won't feed my reloads.
