home defense shooting by The Salty Cracker

Sorry but I couldn't find the original video and this is a presentation by The Salty Cracker. This is being shared so that we can all learn from it.

Essentially there are three occupants in the house. A guest, a man and his girlfriend. Two armed burglars enter and one forces the guest onto the ground. The second burglar begins to ransack the house. Thanks to the camera system the occupant upstairs is aware of them. He arms himself.

Burglar enters the room and a shootout ensures. It appears the burglar's gun has a flashlight. The occupant takes a bullet to the foot and shoulder. The girlfriend who was laying in bed takes a bullet to the leg which travels up the lung. The burglar gets a bullet in the leg and is caught on camera limping out.

Apparently the occupant:

1) tell the GF to seek cover. You can't tell if there's a closet from the image but that would have been better than laying in the open and in the line of fire. I can't tell if the bed has much space for her to hide behind but there certainly is a dresser that is slightly out of the line of fire.
2) Occupant did not seek cover and was fully exposed and illuminated during the firefight. He presented a good target.

Everyone survived and the burglar was arrested by the police.

Final lesson: Have a plan including evacuation as an option. Make sure everyone knows the plans. Train and practice.

Yeah, training is almost as important as having a gun in the first place. If i was in the situation, I'd have the girlfriend under the bed and I'd use that dresser as cover. I'd have the gun trained on the door and nail the intruder as soon as he stepped in.

I have kids so barricading in place is not an option for me. My house is fairly hardened with hurricane rated impact windows and doors. We have cameras with lights on motion sense that captures anyone approaching the front door. We also have a dog that will bark if anyone approaches the door. She probably won't do much more (maybe lick you to death), but she does sound pretty ferocious. It would also be more than enough to wake me up. I'd grab the handgun in the quick access safe next to the bed, then grab the AR-9 in the closet. Unless we really pissed someone off and they are after me personally, I think that would be more than enough firepower to convince them to pick an easier house.

Dogs are a good thing, cats...not so much.

Even the most loving and lovable dog can serve at least as a warning system. Mine sure raise heck at things that bump in the night.
Cats will likely remain asleep. Barn cats are a good thing.

Two men broke into a home w/intent to break into a residential security cabinet (gun safe). Juvenile resident saw the two armed men and shot them. They went out the window and (gratefully) didn't expire in the home (what a mess that would be). Since both ne'er do wells have crossed the Styx, they won't be burglaring more homes. It's rehabilitation through reincarnation so now Jesus/Allah/Buddha/name-your-Gawd has a chance to correct them of their ways. I hope the juvenile doesn't have any PTSD.

100% PERFECT

Rehabilitation by way of reincarnation. I can't say I've heard that gem before, but it's now part of my vocabulary.

Drunk guy tries to go home, can't get into his unit and begins kicking in the door. While he's at the right apartment complexunfortunately he's at the wrong apartment and not his own. Oppsie.

Used to spend a lot of summers in Bowling Green taking classes. My favorite breakfast place, Judy's International, was sold before we got there and a tornado leveled it (along with the adjacent Robin Inn).
