Beginner traditional .50 cal
I might be in the market for a traditional (probably percussion cap) muzzle loader in .50 cal. I'd most likely use it for whitetail (Wisconsin, maybe South Dakota) and muley (S. Dakota, maybe Nevada) hunting. I'm not looking to put a scope on it.
I was looking at the Cabela's Hawken Traditional percussion. I don't want the kit to put together, but the finished rifle. Is this a good first start with traditional rifles? Does anyone have this from Cabelas? I don't have any experience with black powder...I just know I'd like to start out with more of a traditional style gun. |

Yes it's a very good start up gun. I had one for many years. If you're into traditional tho you might want to take a look at the Lyman Great Plains. It's closer to a real Hawken than the Cabella's.

As Hawg Haggen stated,
The Lyman is a great rifle. I have several BP’s CVA’s, Lyman, and tradition Most of mine where kits but they all shoot great and are well built. Not sure how much you want to spend on a rifle, but www.budsgunshop.com has good prices on Lyman, Tradition and others that are more traditional looking. ___________________________ Good Luck, Stay Safe and Enjoy. |

Thanks for the tip about the Lyman Great Plains!... So much prettier than the Cabela's! I like the styling, profile a lot more. All other things being equal, I'd rather have a rifle that I think is good looking. Maybe I'll check out some post-holiday prices on this one.
