Caribou horns

Well, after a year or so in my garage, the wife leaned on me to get these things mounted. She decided that our den would look better with more horns in it. Have I mentioned that I love her?

I'm not quite finished yet, the plaque is drying in the garage, and I am going to put some trim "rope" around the skull to board and horn to leather spots, but you get the idea.

That looks good and I like the rope idea.

The rope idea came from me plagarizing the other set I have. A real live taxidermist did those.

It is a lacy, sissy, gold colored rope. You couldn't pull a golf cart from a mud puddle with this kind of rope.

The kind of rope that with which you'd let a girl tie you.

Looks pretty good so far. If you still have some leather left over that you used on the base. Tri-fold it over long ways and glue it together. You don't want to make it real wide . Maybe 1/3 of an inch. Then wrap that around the base of the horns, right under the burr of the horns. Before you glue the rope on try that and then the rope and see which one you like better. My dad is a Taxidermist and does some of his horn mounts that way. He has a couple of other ways that he has done them as well but I kind of like that one the best. Looks pretty good on deer horns at least. I don't know which one would look the best on caribou horns. Looking good so far. Post some pics when you get it finished up.

Are they antlers on caribou? I thought they did'nt shed them, so they would be called horns. "Horns" is easier to spell anyway.

They are antlers.

Unlike deer antlers they are very light. Like they were made out of pine.

They are in velvet in alot of hunts. Velvet would indicate the initial stage of losing the antler.

They drop every year. They regrow every year. They are antlers.

Pronghorn- horns
Bighorn Sheep- horns
deer, moose, elk, caribou - antlers

You got that backwards. When antlers are in velvet they are still in the growing phase. The velvet is the skin covering a highly vascular tissue that feeds the awesome growth of the antlers. Researchers have been studying this for a long time, looking for ways to grow new bone or healing broken ones at a much faster rate.

Yea what I meant to say was when caribou hunting sometimes the velvet is hanging or with velvet falling off. Yada yada yada thanks.

I did not do the mounting job, if that's what you mean, but the beast is mine.

Having a cow attached to it does make moving it very challenging, but I like it anyway.
