how dangerous is this
i'm shooting a ruger vaquero in a 45 colt, 3 5/8ths barrel
this gun consistantly shoots low with standard loads, however at short ranges, 15-25 yards it is pretty good with 4.2 grains of TiteGroup behing a 250 grain lrnfp. this is a whole grain below what laser cast told me was the minimum, they said 5.2 gr for 722 fps is this dangerous? do you have any suggestions? thank you |

No, it's not dangerous IMO. TiteGroup has a wide margin of safety for light loads. That is not true of most other fast burners.

"Not true of most other fast burners..."
Mal, Never heard of problems using ultra light loads of fast burning powders, but I have heard of the "detonation" claims from light loads of slow-burning powders... I've gone as low as .5 grains of WW 231 in .38 Spl. before.

.5 gr of 231
What kind of velocity do you get with a charge that low? I tried some ultra light charges of bullseye but was getting bullets stuck in the barrel.

Mike - I wasn't talking about the SEE (secondary explosion effect) phenomenon although I see how it may appear that I was. I was referring to the ability of relatively small quantities of TG to ignite completely in large capacity cases. I should have used the word "useability" instead of "safety". Griz's experience with Bullseye is exactly what I was thinking about. Even half a minimum charge of Bullseye should at least get the bullet out of the barrel if it had ignited completely.
