7.62x39 with Winchester 748?
Has anyone ever used Winchester 748 to load for the 7.62x39? What bullet? Winchester's reloading manual has no information on this round, and I'm looking to use the rifle powder I have on hand. I've only loaded pistol so far, so I'm not familiar with the characteristics of this powder.

It's a little slow for 7.62x39. The best powders for the 7.62x39 are the really fast rifle powders such as AA's 2015 and 1680. For 748, I would start with a load of around 27grs and work up. Somewhere around 30-31 grains you should have a compressed load and max out. BTW, if you do load for an SKS or AK-use hard primers. This means CCI basically. You may have slamfires otherwise.
Win748 is a great powder. It burns about like Hodgdon's Ball(C)2, and is useful in cartridges from the .222 up to .308 size cartridges. Some use it in the 30/06, but personally, I like to use bulkier powders in the long actions. One thing about 748-it is very finicky with temperature changes. Pressures will be much higher on hot days. |

Maybe I'll save it for my .223 then.
What powder would you recommend, and what bullet? Thanks for the replies. Check Six. |

Accurate Arms #1680, as mentioned above...
Is THE powder for 7.62x39. It's made in Czechoslovakia, and the one-pound bottle on my reloading bench even states it was developed for that cartridge.
I handload for my Bulgarian SLR-95, and use AA1680, Winchester or bulk Russian 123gr FMJ bullets, and either Remington or Winchester brass. (Remember, the Remington brass uses small rifle primers) I crank out several hundred rounds at a time on my Dillon 550, because the 30-round mags and 75-round drums sure do empty quickly when I shoot 100 yard steel silhouettes. For a while, I tried Alliant 2400, and Hodgdon 335, but both of these powders ended up giving high pressure signs well before reaching the velocity of either the surplus military ammo, or U.S. commercial fodder. AA1680 dropped the pressures and boosted the velocity to what it should be. Accurate did offer their 2200 powder in bulk 8-pound kegs a while ago, it was considered to be a good powder for the 7.62x39 round, also. If you want my AA1680 load, just shoot me an email. |
