Pittsburgh vs 2A

I live in metropolitan Pittsburgh, and if you follow the news at all, you are likely aware of the tragic mass shooting that occurred here late last year. It was a very tragic event and obviously the perpetrator was a sick individual.

However instead of addressing the obvious mental health issues that the perpetrator clearly suffers from, our socialist mayor Bill Peduto has decided to politicize the tragedy and use it to push his own political agenda of stripping away gun rights. Specifically the proposed bills are as follows-

"One is a bill that would make it unlawful to manufacture, sell or possess an assault weapon within the city limits. The bill’s definition of assault weapons includes the Colt AR-15 automatic rifle used in the Tree of Life shooting, as well as certain kinds of shotguns and handguns modified to have a larger shooting capacity.

Another bill bans bump stocks, armor-piercing bullets and other weapon accessories.

The third bill gives city courts expanded rights to seize the firearms of citizens deemed a threat by their immediate family members or law enforcement."

The enoromous issue with this is that gun regulation is the sole power of the state. The City of Pittsburgh does not have the authority to create this type of legislation. More ironically if you read the article, the bill does nothing to address handguns which account for the weapon used in 81% of gun related homicides in Pennsylvania. I am disgusted with Mayor Bill Peduto, the City of Pittsburgh City Council, and our sorry excuse for a governor, Tom Wolf.

The problem is that Pittsburgh is such a liberal city and is becomimg increasingly more liberal. I don't live in the city so I don't get to vote for mayor, but this legislation would affect anyone who travels into or through the city. The absolutely unbelievable part of this is Peduto thinking he is above the law, and then having the nerve to taunt the (also liberal) attorney general who warned him that he does not have the authority to pass this legislation and if he attempted to it could bring on criminal charges.

Thank goodness E.R. Shaw is in Washington, not Pittsburgh propper.

It's the third propposed bill that is troublesome.

Here is an update. A Mount Washington resident is seeking impeachment of Mayor Bill Peduto. It will likely be a fruitless effort, but at least it shows that there are plenty of people who aren't happy.

If the state has a "pre-emption" law, then cities, no matter how much the mayor or city council wants it, are not permitted to make laws that are more restrictive than the state law.

Seattle tried it some years back, after being legally advised not to, they passed a law restricting carry in city parks and property. Taken to court, and the court tossed the law out. The city simply did not have the legal authority to make such a law.

So, impeach the mayor, or re-elect him, I don't care, that's a local matter, but I'd think carefully about keeping someone in office so clueless that they will waste the city's time and money with a law that they know will be thrown out.

They may be fine with spending YOUR money to "make a point" and probably are, after all, tis not their money they're wasting...

Again, I don't live in the city, I live in a neighboring township, so it's not my tax money nor my vote, but this proposed legislation would affect everyone who travels through the city. Peduto is a moron, but I don't doubt he will be re-elected. People are dumb and will vote for anyone who promises them a handout. I can only hope the DA will seek legal action against the mayor and city council to the fullest extent of the law. Peduto's actions just go to show how arrogant and self-righteous he is. Meanwhile, City schools are a disaster with approximately a 30% dropout rate, the infrastructure is crumbling with roads and bridges in shambles and the PWSA constantly having outages and issuing boil water advisories, and the taxes continue to increase. And yet they wonder why the city population is consistently decreasing.

My son and I were at the meeting. He is a city resident and had his 3 minutes to speak.
Peduto is a , well I can't say it here, on this and many other matters.

Pa is controlled by Philly and Pittsburgh. Two liberal badtions that control the rest of the state. We are going the way of New York, Jersey and Maryland.

Many people in those states thought it couldn't happen there. Pa is next and it is coming your way.

Preemption will stop this one, but Governor Wolf is on board with this. He will attempt to pass these laws statewide, then preemption is mute. Peduto has his eye on the governership and will probably get elected as a result of the high population cities.

The "red flag law" is in the process at the state level. The last attempt was defeated by one vote and it didn't proceed.

Peduto says the impeachment won't stick, and he's probably right, but he's also full of himself, so everything he says has to be taken with a grain of salt. The ball is going to be placed in the court of the District Attorney who I hope will pursue criminal charges against Mayor Peduto and city council. As far as being bad news, Peduto is just a bad mayor in general. Almost everything he's done for the city has been a PR stunt and nothing more. His useless bike lanes, the failed Uber driverless cars, the goats on Polish hill to eat the brush, etc, etc. Luke Ravenstahl was a pretty bad mayor but compared to Peduto he's Ronald Reagan.

I know there was a bill the other year in PA that would not allow lower munincipalities to enact stricter ordinances than the state. Was aimed more specifically towards firearms. It didn't pass.

Pennsylvania has had firearms preemption for years. A bill to do that wasn't necessary.

Are you perhaps thinking of a bill to add monetary penalties, in order to give the existing preemption law some teeth?

Really, really pathetic. Bill Peduto is a disgrace to the city, the state, the country and the Constitution. What an arrogant ass.

Looks like you folks need a new candidate for Mayor.
Copied frm post #4

I suspect this is one of those Democrat controlled for the past 60 years areas. Any 'new candidate' will have to be (D) or not stand a chance. Also I wonder what the political afillation of the majority (85%) of the city council is?? (D) I bet...
