.40 carbine??

Alright guys, I'm looking for some advice on a .40 cal carbine. What's out there? Anybody have any experience, good or bad.

well i'm sure there are carbines in .40 S&W, 10mm Auto or even rarer leverguns in .41 Mag.

Alot call them junk, but the .40 cal hi points are a blast to shoot, accurate and even reliable.

I had a JR Carbine in .40S&W that took Glock magazines for a while before I thinned the herd a bit. I bought it used but is looked like it had barely been shot. Well after the first few rounds I knew why the original owner ditched it. Every other round or so would jam when being chambered. Upon closer inspection I found that the feed ramp had a very sharp edge and was digging into the brass. I pulled the barrel and rounded the edge on the feed ramp and after that it never had a issue again for several thousand rounds.
Only other thing I could possible pick about the rifle is that you have to remove the buffer tube to take the gun apart to do a thorough cleaning. I guess it has to do with the blowback design.

Discontinued Ruger PC4 is another choice. A tad unnecessarily hefty, IMO, for the round it shoots, but within proper parameters for a pistol carbine. "PC" actually stood for Police Carbine IIRC - ?

+1 for the Ruger PC4, I had one and it was a great rifle, wish I had not thinned the heard and got rid of all 40 cal weapons.

You won't find this on the shelf, but I've always thought that a box magazined, short and light carbine ala M1, but in .40 cal, (imagine a streatched 10mm case, or a .30 carbine case in .40 cal) to be an interesting idea. Winchester had a .40 SLR case down the same path I think.

Maybe something on the 7.62x39 case, perhaps you could use AK mags?

Love my Sub 2000 in .40. Took a while to find it. But worth it.

While researching another post, I read of a .40 cartridge that involved turning down the rim, and shortening a 45-70 case to .44 mag length, then necking the case down to .40 cal. Ruger chambered some prototypes of the old .44 carbine in this ".40 magnum" and claimed higher energy levels than a .30-30.

Don't know what they used for slugs, as the .40 as we know it was decades off. I guess .38-40 slugs. The engineers loved it, but Winchester would not load it, nor anybody else for that matter I guess.

I reckon the OP was all about the .40 S&W, but this hot .40 business I find really fascinating.

I have owned and shot a lot of pistol caliber carbines, it’s one of my weaknesses.
The Hi-Point 9mm, owned one for several weeks and sold to a friend: sloppily put together, poor quality of fit and finish, ugly as sin but very reliable, accuracy acceptable.
Ruger PC4. 40, Great little gun but boring as sin never owned and don’t want one. Shot one once and it just left me cold and I am a Ruger fan.
MP-5 clone, I own a 9mm but have shot a 40. The 40 is very rare. Pricy but the one I have will take HK parts which was important to get it functioning reliably. You can spend so much money on adding accessories you can get well over the price of the gun. Its heavy and absolute no recoil. You’re going to have to drop well over 1200 for a good one. I’m trying to trade mine for a Kriss.
Beretta CX4, IMO this is the best of the pistol semi autos on the market. If price is not a problem. Mine is in 9mm and uses the magazine for the Beretta 8000 Cougar which they don’t offer any more. I wanted it to use the same mag as my 8000. It’s easy to turn it from right to left hand. Good accessories available. Many people complain about the triggers ?? Mine has a good trigger which is better than my Glock. I can get good accuracy out to 100 yards with ether jacketed or lead. 147 Gr Lead is the best and I have pulled 4 inch groups at 100, but it took some time to find a good reload.
Of everything I own and everything I have owned it’s the best of the group. Mine has an AimPoint and it’s a perfect match between gun and optics.

I say go for the Hi Point 40 carbine and convert it to 10mm, or the 45 carbine and convert it to 460Rowland.
Flat shooting, hard hitting, and very reliable. Hi points require the owner to "finish" it themselves but once you invest a little effort into smoothing them up they run great and shoot straight.

How would you go about converting .40 cal to 10mm? Out of curiosity.
I have a .40 that shoots very well and accurate. Also accuired a couple 9mm for barter items , but I'll keep the .40.

I believe all that's required in the hi point carbine is a chamber reamer and a stiffer recoil spring.
There's a video on YouTube posted by iraqveteran8888 where the guys from Moss Pawn did just that and the results were very satisfactory.

Thanks but luckily when the Clinton stupidity went away, Beretta offered 15 round mags for the Cougar, I purchased 10 for 20+$ each.
Now you’re lucky for even Stoeger for less than 40.
