destroyer not ejecting properly

I bought a destoyer carbine last saturday. On the second shot, the fired casing did not extract. We got it out with a screwdriver, and managed to put the extractor (which had fallen off) back on the bolt. However, the problem persisted approxamently 1/4 of the time. WHat is causing this problem? WHat can I do to fix it?

Are you using 9mm Largo ammo? (not 9mm Luger which is a higher pressure and different size)

yes, i am using 9mm largo. It's surplus, but non-corrosive. Year: 1981 Made in: Toledo

I second that question, extractor problems with the destroyer is well documented if using the wrong ammunition. If shooting 9mm para from it you're using the extractor to headspace, and it's not built for it.

edit: you answered while I was typing. Did you get the gun as straight surplus, or did someone else have a chance to abuse it first?

Check the chamber, if the wrong ammo was used at some point you might have excessive pitting at the throat end of the chamber that makes the fired (right) case stick.

Is it possible that the collar ring is weakened, in turn allowing the extractor to be easily pulled off?

Check the ammo rim dia., spec. is .392"-.394". I have some surplus 1977 ammo and rim measures .384" out of spec. I heard the Spanish ammo has gone through many changes through the years.

I'd measure the O.D. of a fired case and compare it to an unfired case. If the chamber is rough the measurements could reveal that. I think that's a longshot though.

Try replacing the extractor before you go much further...

Yes. The very bottom of the cartridge case that the extractor grips. It should measure .392"-.394" as was was mentioned before.

Manufactures don't always obey spec. The 6.5x55 case is supposed to have a .480" case head. Most US makers use the .473" case head that the 30-06 uses. Sometimes you can get away with it, other times it causes problems.

I was specifically talking about measuring the outside diameter of a case before and after firing. If there is a large difference >.001" or so, especially in the area where a 9x19 case ends. it would tell you about the condition of the chamber.
