Need help choosing

Hello to everyone ,(sorry if wrong section)

I'm in a predicament , I'm stuck between to choices and need so help making my mind up . I have to options In mind ;

Option A: buy a center fire bolt action and a alright scope try to keep it under $800 dollars , either a Remington 700 adl , savage trophy hunter or a howa 1500 all can be found under 800 (not a lot of funds reason for option b)

Or

Option B : put a glass on my saiga 7.62x39 and buy a nice bolt action 22lr with a good glass on it .

The needs for the center fire rifles would be hunting medium game. Such as white tail and mule deer

But if I would buy a 22 I could have fun plinking rifle and my saiga would be good up to 200yards for live game and 500 yards for steel

IMO the 7.62 X 39 is not a 200 yard deer cartridge. It's more of a 125 yard deer cartridge.

Given those options I would go with option A. A good bolt action is a better choice for hunting. And save up for the 22.

I will offer option C: get a budget bolt action like the Marlin X, Ruger American or Savage Axis, and A budget 22. Scope both modestly. Then save up for the really nice gun/scope you want.

Big al hunter has the right idea with option c if your just starting out it will benifit you in the long run

out of the three rifles marlin, the axis, and ruger american would you guys recommend? also how would they compare towards a remington 700adl ? also comparing it to a howa 1500 im being offered in 30-06 for 450

I have three rifles built on the Howa action, Weatherby .257, S&W 7mm Rem Mag, and Howa 1500 .223. They are all great shooters.

I would go with the Axis. It is proven accuracy out of the box. Trigger is a easy fix and now you can get a stock for $99.00 from Boyds.

I have a Weatherby Vanguard in the stable (same as your Howa). It's a good, solid rifle.

I have no experience with the Axis, so I won't comment there.

I have handled a Ruger American and have read several posts on here about their accuracy being very good. With a ~$320 price tag, there's plenty of room for optics, rings and ammo.

As for the Remington 700, they are solid rifles and I have a BDL in the safe too. I have been eyeballing a youth 700 with scope for $415 at the local Walmart. The scope is a Bushnell I believe. They have other packages for close to that.

Bottom line, for your $800 price point, even Savage is in your reach. They have some package deals wih Nikon glass you could still get into. I think you should have no problem putting together a respectable hunting rig and any of those should do fine.

Thanks to every one for their replys I'll have to keep my eyes open for a short action I'm passing on the 30-06 I would prefer a .308 so the searching will continue a lot of the sports stores are having a lot of sales on certain rifle might have to go check them out and see which one feels better in my hands . I'd recommend the Ruger American as an inexpensive, yet a great buy. Get a Leupold 3-9X VX-2 and you've got an accurate, nice-handling rifle.

Check on .308 ammo availability before buying. I've found it relatively scarce compared with hunting cartridges like the .270 Win, .30-06, etc.

As already stated check ammo availability as far as the .308 goes. I could go to my local Walmart right now and find .243,270,-06, 300 mag, and 7mm mag and I guarantee there won't be a single box of .308. Keep in mind that people that are still panicking over ammo have ar 10's that shoot .308 so they buy up everything they can.

So far at my local Walmart and big 5 I can find .308 and 30-06 no 270 Winchester

take into consideration I live in Cali so my hunting ammo has to be ordered online since I have to use copper bullets in the condor section , so I would just sight in my scope with that kind of ammo and just shoot that even if I'm not in the condor section . I am well aware of their being more hunting ammo for 30-06 then 308 but being that .308 would be a short action their would be more rifle stock options compared to the long action. So far I am still debating on both rounds and seeing what comes up thanks for everyone's opinion. Keep em coming . Also about the ruger I'll have to check it out at bass pro this coming Black Friday they will be on special that day .

Hey so I have another question ,( you guys are probably tired of me anyways)

I have been looking at rifles and I found the savage trophy hunter xp for 509 plus tax and dros but I started thinking I could buy savage axis xp and a 22lr and still have left over for ammo for the same price . I need help deciding before this weekend .

According to the Savage website the Trophy Hunter already comes with a Nikon BDC scope mounted... For $509, that leaves you almost $300 for a sling and ammo.

The Nikon glass is good for its price point. I did not see if it was a Pro Staff model or their Buckmasters line... But either will work.

If you get the Axis, it won't come with a factory-mounted scope and you lose the accutrigger, which I have dry fired but never shot. Those who own them seem to like them more than the non-accutrigger. So off the bat you will have to invest a couple hundred for the scope, then bases and rings, then sling and ammo...

Out of your options you mentioned, I would suggest the Trophy Hunter.

Your money, your call. I personally prefer Nikon glass to Bushnell, but that is a preference. If your choices are those 2, I would still go for the Trophy Hunter.

Interesting about the package deal on the Axis. I didn't see it listed on the Savage website. I must have missed it or BPS is putting it together as a package deal.

Good luck on your choice. Regardless of what you get, go shoot it! A bunch!!
