source(s) for BP?

I went to my cabinet today and discovered that the only BP I had was a partial flask of 3F. After half a dozen phone calls or more, it appears nobody locally (within 50 miles) sells genuine BP anymore. I have some leads on two other shooters who may sell me a pound, granulation uncertain.

Maine Powder house is 10-7. Powder Inc has a 5 lb minimum, with hazmat fees, a 5 lb order is $145 !!!!!!

Grafs is some better, 4 lbs at near $100 for 4 lbs.

What are folks doing for powder.....that is higher than I pay for smokeless by the pound, over the counter.

Either find some fellow shooters to pitch in for a bulk 25 pound order, or buy in bulk and shoot for years.

I used to be lucky to live within range of Graf and Sons so I'd stop in powder from time to time.

I'm seven pounds away from being in your situation now that I've moved!

When I can buy real bp I buy Swiss from Powder Inc. When I can't I shoot Pyrodex.

The Bass Pro price was $25/lb. ,last year. On line the price is about $15. It doesn't take much to cover the haz. shipping.
When I started shooting black powder the local sport shop sold it for $2.

It was $6 for me back in the '70s.

Maine Powder House, Track of the Wolf are good online sources.

Six pounds from Graf's a few weeks ago. Should last awhile. Order shipped within two days, and packed very well.

Pyrodex was 24 a pound and blackthorn 209 was 37 bucks for 10 ounces. I think I'm right. This was at wallyworld yesterday.

Ridiculous

Think I was 17 when I thought $2 was excessive so I ordered a 15 lb. barrel and got it shipped to the door for about $1/lb. !
That was before the crazies were blowing people up.

I was contemplating a powder order a few weeks ago. Seemed to me Graf's had the better pricing / selection compared to Powder Inc.

Graf's adds $20 for hazmat and $7 handling/shipping to the total order.
Powder Inc includes shipping and hazmat in their price.

Compare the following:

10lbs Goex 3f
Graf's with shipping & Haz = $207.85 (lowest)
Powder Inc shipped = $222.50

25lbs Goex 3f
Graf's with shipping & Haz = $477
Powder Inc shipped = $452.50 (lowest)

Graf's private label Schuetzen is the best deal.
10lbs 3f shipped = 187.50 (lowest)
25lbs 3f shipped = $427.70 (lowest)

My local store carries Graf's Scheutzen for $20lb + tax, which for me is more convenient.

The sad reality is that unless you can afford to buy 10+ pounds at a go you are looking at $25 a pound. Even when we had a local gun store that sold BP it was $26 a pound.

You might consider making your own. I'm about to start myself - I have all the ingredients prepped and have a press puck and ball mill I just need to go pick up a harbor freight hydraulic press. You can make it for about $5 a pound.

What I did like about Graf's, is that I could mix different 1 lb. brands. I bought three different brands of 2f & 3f, for a total of 6.

Not an answer....but an observation. If you "call' around looking for BP...you stand a greater chance of contacting someone who does not know if they have BP and will just say no. Its been my personal experience, with my local Bass Pro...when asking the guys behind the counter if they had "real BP' the first answer was 'NO". But an older gentleman waiting on another customer...waved at me...and when he got the chance...told me that they did have real BP...locked up in a FD approved safe in the back...and sadly added most of the part time employees did not know.

aha!

Got to digging around in the cabinet and lo and behold,....... 1.5 lbs of 3F, and a pound of 2F. So I'm good for the time being, but I will have to work something out. I've learned of some other local possiblilities, but I have more than enough to hunt with for the present.

Thanks for all replies. The BP situation has really changed since I started years ago.

When I get in the Huntsville area, I will check out the Bass Pro shop there.

Leeds is a bit farther than I'd like to drive......but I have occassional cause to get in the B-ham area now and again, I'll put it on my list.
