It's easier for me to buy Priv 150 sp from online. 20 rounds for like $13-14. I Use them at the range or deer hunting and them reload them. AIMSURPLUS is really cheap I bought 3 boxes and then another 3 boxes. That gives me 120 cases to use.
I saw that Cabelas has the Priv in stock at the store for $16. Save on shipping. |

My local gunshop had a ammo can full of Brand New Primed Winchester 7.62x54 brass and i pretty much bought it all and he also gave me a pack of Norma brass. I was thinking of selling some since its so hard to find, but i might just keep it cause its so hard to get brass by itself

will do. As of right now, im probably just gonna keep it all since i have less than 200 of them. Since i usually always buying surplus spam cans for plinking and not commercial ammo, i never end up getting more brass to reload. Ill have to contact winchester and see why they aren't selling it anymore

Hey folks,
In August I sold most of my guns (over 40), but I still have a good bit of my ammo and all my reloading stuff. After reading this thread, I thought I ought to see what I might have in 7.62X54 ammo, and I just found a 100 round MTM ammo box filled with 100 rounds of brand new S&B non-corrosive ammo with boxer primers. I also found 100 rounds of surplus 7.62X54 that is berdan primed. The surplus stuff is in cardboard boxes. I never liked shooting the surplus stuff, but the S&B ammo is top notch stuff. I used S&B in a half dozen calibers, and it reloads and performs very well. If anyone would be interested, I would be willing to sell it for whatever is a fair price plus the shipping costs. I also found an MTM ammo box with 100 rounds of new S&B 303 British rounds. I thought I had some surplus 303, but I cannot find it right now. I would also mention that I have 90 rounds of new S&B 6.5X55 Swedish ammo plus a bunch of stripper clips for it. If anyone has any interest, you can e-Mail me at [email protected]. Best wishes, David Wile |

I find it simpler to get loaded ammo in 7.62x54r in brass cased ammo than buying the brass alone!
I think most is loaded by the same company. Besides, you get to shoot once then reload, rather than pay twice as much to reload once! I have close to 200 pieces of brass that way! Also I have 20 pieces I have reloaded 8 times so far!

That is just not so.

A quick check of Cabela's and midway ..... most of their 7.62x54r component stuff was out of stock.... and the brass prices were insane: between $1.25 and $1,50 a pop ...... $29 bucks for a hundred for Sierra .311 150 gr bullets..... ....figure 4 cents for a primer..... 20 cents worth of powder..... $1.23 more to reload than to buy the PPU ...... and when you are done, you can reload the PPU for 54 cents, the same as the cost of reloading your empty brass from Lapua or Norma ..... |

I buy "Win" stamped (primed) S&B or PPU 7.62x54R brass for $45 per 100. (So, I also get a free "mil-spec" magnum primer for the first load. - a savings of about $3.60, at current local prices.)
If I amortize that cost across 10 hand loads, I can load for $6.78 per box of 20. Amortized across only 5 loads, it runs me $7.25 per box of 20. I can load 215 gr Woodleigh Weldcores for $19.43 per box. That's an "ultra-premium" load, for less than the cost of just 20 pieces of Norma or Lapua brass. I'll take the PPU or S&B brass, any day.

I also started pulling the bullets from some Russian bulk FMJ and putting the Sierra 150 SP and using that for the range. (Ranges around my area don't let you use FMJ) I just measure the powder across 10 rounds and make it consistant. They shoot well and the bulk handles the .311 round fine when pressing it in. I like this combo approach because if I want to just blast away at Zombie targets, I use the bulk. If I want to hunt, I use the Privi reloads (60 reloadable rounds).
My wanting to shoot weighs heavier than the cost to reload Vs. Commercial. |

45 cents for a case 20 cents for powder 4 cents for a a primer 29 cents for a .311 150gr Sierra soft point 98 cents/round for the first box vs. 80 cents for the first box of PPU, after that first box, it's the same cost per round to reload both (53 cents). Amortizing does not matter, as you can reload the spent PPU cases about as many times as you can the new PRVI brass..... |

And, using a .312" 150 gr Hornady Interlock can drop the cost of the bullet to $0.19 each (less, if you are a bargain shopper). (Not everyone has a .311" bore. Some people are even lucky enough to be dealing with .308" bores, for even more savings.) That drops the cost to $0.84 each. Having a hand load that costs $0.04 more than marginal-quality factory ammo...? Yea... that factory ammo will still be sitting on the merchant's shelves, while I shoot my hand loads. If you can't get the brass; you can't get the brass. Without brass, none of this matters, anyway. Work with the resources available to you.

Are you saying Grafs is selling once fired as new? I haven't seen them for $0.45/each for primed. |

Interesting... I have never seen it sold in virgin, unprimed form, before. Grafs must have ordered a substantial quantity.
But.... it doesn't matter. It's out of stock. You can't get it anyway. Quote:

I use PPU and Win/S & B brass I bought in quantity several years ago. The brass is the most expensive component depending on how you load your ammo.
I shoot mainly cast and swagded lead bullets in my mosins using Alliant Red Dot and 2400 powders,Bullseye and 90 gr. 32 cal. LSWC make good tree rat loads as well. These loads run me 10 cents or less per rd. and the brass least forever. I save the more expensive J bullets for longer range shooting. |
