Learn the trajectory of your load, practice shooting from field positions, and learn to judge range. You may not have time to get the rangefinder, and bipod.

I agree with most of that......

With a flat shooting cartridge (I love my .270 WIN!) you don't need to worry about rangefinders at under 300 yards. I have not ever been in a hunting situation where the quarry was beyond 300 yards and I did not have 5 seconds to put the laser on him, unless he was already running from me, in which case, the probability of hitting him in the vitals is so small anyway as to call into question the ethics of even taking the shot...... maybe some people regularly practice on moving targets beyond 300 yards, but not me.

I have missed out on a buck because I was futzing with shooting sticks instead of just copping a squat and killing him in his bed. High grass made prone position unpossible, and I tried to sit and get on sticks .... he saw my movements and was gone into an unpicked cornfield in a couple of seconds......

I have since learned to use a sling and the "rice paddy prone" position, which is much faster to get into and much more stable than kneeling or offhand.
