Short barreled derringers?
How effective were the short barreled black powder derringers, like the Philadelphia derringers? I read that the reason why black powder revolvers usually has a longer barrel than modern smokeless revolvers is because the black powder burn much slower and therefore need a longer barrel.
The shortest Philadelphia derringers had only a 1.5" barrel, how ineffective where they compared to a smokeless version? And does the barrel include or exclude the chamber? |

Barrel length includes the chamber. They were effective from point blank range to across a table top distance. Death would not be immediate but would likely come later from infection or there would be a long recovery period. Abraham Lincoln was shot in the head with one at point blank range and it took him nine hours to die.

If you're interested in a percussion derringer, I would look at the ones made by Great Gun in Czech Republic:
http://www.greatgun.eshop-zdarma.cz/...c=lang&lang=en Might be easier to email them: [email protected] They make double barrel (over/under) percussion derringers in 9mm, .45, and .54 calibers and also offer them in various barrel lengths from 4 to 6 inches. These appear to be really, REALLY well made, the only problem is there's no retailer here in the US that imports them, so it's very difficult for people here to get them and it's a shame because the derringers are very good and a good price; the conversion put the prices around $400. Still cheaper than those Pedersoli Philadelphia derringers. EDIT: And I'm assuming that you live in the US, but it doesn't sound like you do.
