Shooting a piece of rail road track with a 50.

Found this on FB, via Iowa Gun Owners. This guy shoots a hunk of railroad track with a variety of fifty cal. ammo. What I found most interesting is the recoil of the fifty is much less than I thought it would appear to be. By the way Iowa Gun Owners FB link usually has some interesting, educational and fun stuff.

Recoil did not look all that bad, and he was using a cheapo wally world plastic table as well. Interesting video.

The guy in the video does a lot of .50 BMG videos.
A .50 Mk211 Raufoss round is an explosive round with a tungsten penetrator and go through virtually anything and leave a mess of anything that’s behind the target.
An AP / APIT round is similar on hard objects, and easily goes thru an engine block as long as it doesn’t hit the crank square on.
Ball (FMJ lead core) May or may not go thru hardened steel depending on thickness and angle you hit it.

FYI Raufoss rounds are $60-100 each on the civilian market ( but are very impressive on engine blocks (and the car behind it) and most light armor.
FYI ball rounds are about $4-5 each.

It's a semi-automatic with a very effective muzzle brake.

.50 recoil, especially the semi autos isn’t all that bad. Think 20 to 12 gauge shotgun IMO. So behind the gun.....no big deal.

Now where you DO NOT want to be is off to the sides. Those muzzle brakes will evacuate your sinuses in a hurry. They are hellacious off to the sides and back a bit.

Heck, my bolt action Windrunner has negligible recoil due to its 30lb + weight and a very effective brake. Standing directly behind the shooter will keep you out of the blast zone. It's a good idea to make sure there are no loose objects (water bottles, chrono, etc.) in the blast zone though.
