6.8 ar barrel

Quick question for those that may know. For the 6.8 SPC is a 1:10, 1:11 , or 1:12 twist rate preferred? As I look at more and more expensive barrels the 1:12 is what is being offered. I’m generally assuming they mean them to be used with the 85-90 grain projectiles. I’m specifically looking for an 18” heavy contour threaded barrel. Thoughts welcome.

I prefer ARP's barrels. Currently they are 1:11.25 or 1:10. Expensive? No. Plus they shoot .5 MOA with my reloads. I reload bullets from 90 to 120 gr.

18" barrel but not heavy...

My 1:12 3 groove barrel stabilizes a 130gr SPH without problems. If you want to shoot heavier/longer bullets, a faster twist would be useful.

What's more important is the land/groove ratio. Most 1:10 6 groove barrels were designed for 270 Win and are tighter than ideal. Most 3, 4, or 5 groove 1:11 are a good choice for the 6.8spc.

I'd recommend getting a barrel from AR15Performance.com

I second the ARP recommendation--Harrison has come very close to perfecting the optimal 6.8 barrel IMO.

My ARP 6.8 barrel is 1:11 and shoots 90 grain bullets as well as I can ask for--pre-deer season zero resulted in a 3 shot cloverleaf @ 100 yards using a 1.5-4x32 set on 4x.

ARP barrels are second to none. 1/11 or 1/12 is what was recommended to me.

Another vote for ARP barrels. My ARP barrel in 6.8 1:11.25 twist is a real shooter. Its not a .5 moa barrel, but its a 3/4 moa barrel with 3 different bullets in handloads and 2 different factory loads. Can't complain about that.

How did I miss this thread? Too late to pile on? Got a 16 and 12.5" 6.8 and the TAC6 'cat from ARP. Plus a few superbolts and muzzle devices.

You were probably too busy hanging out of the 6.8 Forum maybe.

I had decided last year (maybe longer) to give Green Mountain Rifle Barrel Co. a try.
Got the 6.8 barrel and built the gun.
Unfortunately, I haven’t had the chance to shoot it because other hobbies have taken over.
I guess in the spring I’ll try it out.
Nothing to add to the discussion except to give another option. I just wanted to be clear that The Barrel is untested so as not to be misleading. Other owners are claiming good accuracy out of the same barrel.

I have a 358 win barrel made from a green mountain blank and it shoots great--if that helps you any.
