speer deep curls are gone?
supposedly, the deep curl has been discontinued for good... this is a bummer because that is my absolute favorite bullet option for .308 cartridges... now I guess I'll have to sit around and hope hornady stops making exclusively 165gr Amax and goes back to making interbonds. anyone else feel the same?

All Deep Curl bullets in the rifle line were discontinued prior to January 2014. They never made a formal announcement. They simply told distributors, "You won't be getting any more."
Deep Curl bullets for handguns are a bit more tricky. Many have been discontinued altogether, but some live on only in loaded ammunition. ATK is making so many changes to the Speer line of components and ammunition, ever 2-3 years, that it seems like they're trying to alienate customers (reloaders in particular) on purpose...

'Tis true. Love those loads while you can, and try to scrounge up what Deep Curls you can, before people start treating them like gold.
...Which is the opposite of what I'm going to do. I never actually worked up any loads for the Deep Curls that I've got (.44 cal). So, I plan to sell them to one of the guys on the MarlinOwners 444 Marlin forum, that thinks they're the greatest thing since sliced bread. It's a win-win-win, in my mind: A) Whomever ends up with them will be happy to have a better supply. B) I don't have to waste time working up loads for bullets that are now nearly impossible to locate. C) One less product for which ATK will get my money...

Hey Frankenmauser, where in 1B do you live? I used to live and still have a house in downtown Pokey.

Likely because plated rifle bullets have not quite lived up to performance -- you just can't push them as fast as jacketed bullets. The handgun ones are fantastic, (Gold Dot anyone?) but rifle still has a lot of kinks to work out. I don't like beta testing on the public!

This is not true as per communication with Speer. Rifle Deep Curls yes, handgun Deep Curls are still in production and none have been discontinued. Like many bullet manufacturers, production because of the component shortage has shifted to those components with the highest demand. Revolver hunting bullets are down the ladder as for demand and thus, some may not be in current production. The .452, 300 gr Deep Curl is my go to bullet outta the .460 S&W. Have a few hundred in reserve and on the waiting list at several sites for when they come in. |
