When I was a lot younger, a wise man told me where you hit is a lot more important than what you use. Meaning either hollowpoint or round nose.
Make sure it works in your gun, then practice a lot. |

Browning has a 22lr in hollow point and round nose. Faster than most, not stinger fast but fast. Over 1400 for hollow point, can't remember the round nose.

I believe that most if not all 22 HP are 32 gr projectile. Shooting them from a pistol length barrel won't produce enough velocity to mushroom. It's like shooting round nose bullet. Stick with a 40 gr RN projectile and get better penetration.

Have him start paying for his own ammo. $19.95 for 550 rounds of Federal bulk,,, $7.95 times 5.5 = $43.73 for 550 rounds of Mini Mags. I know he's only 10 years old,,, But maybe it's time to teach him a bit about real world expenses. I have a friend with three young sons,,, Those boys could burn through a brick of ammo in no time. To combat that he started deducting the cost of their ammo from their allowance,,, All of a sudden their rate of fire slowed considerably,,, Aiming started to happen and they hit better. I'm not ragging on you my friend,,, It's just that I see this all the time at my rifle/pistol club. We all talk about how the shooting sports promote responsibility,,, Shouldn't the sport also teach a bit about financial responsibility as well? BTW,,, Federal bulk packs are my go-to ammo for plinking,,, That "cheap stuff" cycles and runs well in all of my semi-auto pistols. Aarond P.S. I agree with the many posters who recommend 40 grain Mini Mags,,, Mini Mags are possibly the most reliable .22 ammo on the market,,, And ballistic gel tests show they get decent penetration. You put 4-5 of those in someone's throat or upper chest,,, They will calm down in no time at all. .

With my experience with Winchester 22 rimfire ammo I would be very hesitant to rely on it for any self defense application. Rang ammo for target blasting, OK, but I have had more duds from Winchester rimfire ammo than others including CCI. Also reliability in feeding seems to be a problem I have had with Winchester ammo in several handguns.

My S&W 317 does just fine with CCI Mini-Mags with the 36 grain copper plated hollow point so that's what I carry in it.

Since 90% of shooting is a mental exercise, it's all too easy to dismiss "bad" or poor performance as "Oh well, it's just a cheap .22". Since that ingrains bad habits that can take an enormous amount of time & money to undo, I've come to the conclusion the .22 is counterproductive to learning good habits. Down the road, after the basics have been learned & the refinement phase is underway, then by all means the .22 is a good choice. |
