What is in your SD/HD rifle mags?

I have a 10.5 inch 5.56 which serves as a Home defense/"truck" err... more like "compact car" gun that is loaded with a 30 round PMag in the gun and several additional reloads of 5.56 Winchester ranger 64 grain nosler BSB for outside the home and 5.56 Black hills 77 grain TMK for inside the home.

Im curious...what is your preferred ammo to keep loaded in your rifle for defensive use?

I also use a 10.5” SBR for HD. It’s an LMT, and I also keep a silencer on it (a Saker 5.56). My HD mags are loaded with 75 gr. Hornady TAP. I chose that heavier bullet weight due to the lower velocity of the shorter barrel.

I use a 10.5" 300 BLK AR pistol. The 30 round PMags are loaded with Remington 120 gr Open Tip bullets.

Right now I just have m193 in my Colt 6720. I think I might get some Speer gold dot though. Or maybe i might try my fiochhi polymer tipped varmint ammo.

55gr VMAX in the 5.56 and 110gr VMAX in the .300.

I got some Razorback that came in some snazzy box lol.
Got another mag with soft points.
A couple of mags with Vmax.
Anything is going to be nasty at ranges you can say is “self defense” in a civilized society. I’ve used all kinds of different ammunition on pigs inside of fifty yards; every last bullet type that I’ve used would suffice in a close range situation.

It’s all a moot point, because if:
they got past the dogs,
Two adults armed with pistols
A taser
A late-teen with gorilla strength...
I’m probably not going to be able to unlock the gun safe to pull out an AR.

60gr VMAX... Where I live, I need to limit penetration though walls, but I still want something effective.

I think it would be more effective in an SBR, due to the lower velocity delaying the expansion, and giving better penetration. From the gel tests I seen anyway.

I think If I were you I would try a heavy OTM, bonded soft point or expanding copper round before I went to varmint ammo. The "Urban Tap" line of hornady uses a 55 or 60 grain VMAX bullet and there have been numerous failures reported by officers who were issued those rounds.
Actually, the 193 at high velocity works better the varmint ammo

55 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip Varmint (6x45mm handload)
62 gr "HyperSonic Bonded" Remington factory stuff (sold as a 'Deer & Elk' load)

Other things come first, though. If I run through the other firearms and have to reach for the loaded ARs, we might as well be talking about zombies or poop hitting the fan.

Hornady 110grn TAP in the M1a, run-of-the-mill Federal 5.56mm 55grn FMJ in the AR, and military 00 Buckshot in the 12ga. I say that because a rifle is not the first thing next to my bed (or in the drawer, or in the garage, etc...)

Sure, but some rounds will work better than others. Some will be more effective on target than others, and some will penetrate through walls more than others.

Military FMJ in the trunk AR. Good enough to ruin someone's day.

It has the same POI as my reloads.

55gr VMAX, recommended to me by people who know more about it than I do at the moment.

Same here.

Just a tad bigger, though. It's an old school "trunk gun."

I had previously forgotten about the AR pistol. It's stoked with a discontinued factory Hornady 55 gr SPSX load ("Super Explosive").

62 gr "HyperSonic Bonded" Remington factory stuff
I was looking at those but couldn't find much info on them. I wanted to know how they compared with 62 grain Fusion MSR and the Federal 62 grain xm556bit3.

Do you have any gelatin or velocity data for the Remington Hypersonic bonded?

In a 20" w/ "5.56 Match" chamber and rifle-length gas, velocity was as-advertised - literally within 20 fps - even though Remington's test barrel length is 24".

No gelatin, wet-pack, or clay testing performed. I don't think I even looked for the bullets in the berm that day.

I didn't buy it for actual hunting usage. I bought it because it was on mega-clearance a few years ago, plus there was a rebate available, and I had some builds in progress that I wanted to initially test with factory ammo (that's also where the Hornady SPSX load came from). ...End cost was something like $2.47 / box for the HyperSonic.

My 20 round Pmags for Defense from the 2 legged variety hold 62grain Federal Fusions. I have a 10 round mag with 53grain V-Max for the varmints I can get around the house raccoon, possum, coyote, etc.

Talking about the Remington Hypersonic ammo...I'd bet my last dollar that it's the exact same bullet as the Gold Dot or Fusion.

Remington, Speer, and Federal are all owned by the same umbrella company. To have 3 different bonded bullets of the same weight and design makes 0 sense from a logistical and production cost standpoint. I'm 99.9999% sure they are the exact same bullet. Buy whichever brand is the cheapest.

The Gold Dot and Fusion bullets are excellent btw.

"numerous failures"

brycewise,

Can you please list a source for "numerous failures" regards officers issued TAP ammo? I am curious regards what agencies and how many.
