45acp SMG ammo?
The thread on 9mm SMG ammo raises the question as to whether there was any 45 acp ammo designed specially for SMG and not for pistols. I ask this question because I have an older Colt 1911 and don't want to run into any problems with it.
Thanks in advance for any replies. willr |

It's not something you will encounter on the retail market.

Don't know about now, but in the 70's we loaded the mags for our 1911s and M3s from the same ammo cans.

I'm just speculating here but I think because .45 has lower operating pressures it's probably less of an issue. The reason 9mm SMG ammo causes problems in handguns is because the PSI is incredibly high.
Heck, 9mm+p has PSI almost double that of a standard .45acp load. |

.45 ammo is not seperated into ...
pistol / SMG usage, during WWII and untill the "+P" was introduced it was all the same.
The 9MM is a little different as the original EUROPEAN made 9mm ammo was higher pressure, as at the start of WWII, S&W made a light rifle in 9mm for England BUT used then American ammo not European ammo and ended up with a fiasco. NATO 9mm is rated at greater pressure than the current SAAMI ammo. Is this clear as mud? |
