Remington 700 ADL combo at Cabela's... opinions?

My local Cabela's is running a sale this weekend... the 700ADL w/ a Cabela's Pine Ridge 3-9x40 scope and hard case, $449. Anyone here have experience with either that rifle or that scope?
I have $500 set aside for shopping a . 223 bolt gun, but might consider this ADL in . 243
if it's a particularly good deal...

Right now the ADL's at Wally World are selling for $429 with Remington scopes around here. All I know on most packaged deals I wouldn't want the scope that is on the rifles for very long. I don't have a clue about the Pine Ridge brand Cabela's sells, and their quality.

I've had good luck with every ADL I've ever owned. I don't have any in the safe presently, as I've traded them off for other rifles. Last new ADL I bought a couple of years ago, I got for a little over $300 out the door in .270 Win. I asked how many that they had at that price as I would have bought at least two more if they were available regardless of chambering.

I am a huge fan a Remington, and for along time I didn't want to admit that there quality has slipped a little over the years. Last year I bought a new ADL in .270 and it is a decent rifle, but I think there are better rifles out there right now for the same money. I would look at the Thompson Center Venture Dicks has them right now for $449.00 it's a much better rifle IMO than the 700ADL has a fully free floated barrel, detachable mag, 5R rifling and they guarantee that it will shoot a 3 shot 1 MOA group.

Thompson Center rifles also come with a lifetime warranty the Remington 700 is only for 2 years.

I'm seriously looking at the same deal - but with a .300 or .30-06 rifle.

Remington stopped making the ADL in 2005. However, you can still find them NIB at Cabelas, Big 5, and Sportman's warehouse (here in Colorado). I suppose they're simply selling, slow.

The scope is okay - about a $50 value (wholesale). Still - it's better than what Remington was slapping on their combo kits. I'm planning on upgrading eventually to a Leupold.

The only drawback I'm aware of with the ADL is that you'll have a blind, internal magazine (i.e. - no drop plate - forcing you to work rounds through the chamber to eject them).

Remington has allegedly had issues with their safety mechanism (although I don't think this problem has been observed with later models).

Take a couple of minutes to compare the 700 ADL with the 770 - and I think you'll conclude the 700 is a better model.

Cabelas also has a nice Weatherby kit - which is superior to the ADL (in my opinion).

Remington and other manufacturers make exclusive runs for certain retailers. These are not NOS (new old stock) rifles.

There is no way the 770 is better than the 700ADL. Go with the 700 and save up for a better scope. Who knows maybe the one that comes with it will be ok for awhile. I have a 700adl in .270 and its a sub-moa rifle with remington cor-lokts.

A 700 is a 700, a well-established rifle, and loved and hated by many. The Pine Ridge scopes are pretty good for a cheap scope, I would put one on a rifle I own and not feel too bad about it. Definitely better than the Remington-marked scopes on the WalMart package deals.

Thanks for the clarification regarding the age of the new ADLs.

As you suggest, the only place I find them is with the "big box" sporting goods retailers.

BS (funny initials, eh?) ---- read closely ----- I'd never dream of sugggesting the 770 is as good as the 700 ADL. The former is among the cheapest rifles I've ever seen.

I bought an ADL in January, at a pawn shop. I paid $525 for it, but it was mounted with a Leupold scope. I haven't had a chance to shoot it much, just one range trip in January, but I think it's going to be a shooter.

I don't know about the new Remingtons. Mine was made in August 1983.

I was going to type out this same thing, but figured I'd just copy it and save some time

I've got a Sportsman's Warehouse I like better than Dick's, so I would have used them instead.

A Remington 700 ADL in the mid $400's sounds like a reasonable deal. Mine is 43 years old in .270 Winchester and still shoots MOP groups (minute of pig, it also shoots MOA groups). It's been reliable, safe and accurate for a long time. I have about 700 rounds through mine. The only down side I had was the blued finish rusting easily. I had the barrel and action hard-chromed so no more problems. If I had to buy a new one I would try to find one with a stainless barrel. Good luck.

Our local Dick's has a Remington SPS Buckmasters .270 Win with a 3-9 X 40 Nikon ProStaff scope on it for somewhere around $600.

In November of '09 I bought a Remington 700ADL Varmint in 308 from Dick's. It is a very nice rifle. Bolt is very smooth. Trigger is smooth adn creep free, breaks at around 4 pounds. With my handloads it shoots .59 MOA. With Remington express 150gr PSP's it shoots .65moa. This is with the factory stock that most people like to bash.

That's something I miss living where I do... none of the Wal Mart or Dick's sell guns around here. WI is pretty anti-gun. Was a big shock for me, coming from Texas!

Essentially the difference between the ADL and the BDL is the the ADL has a "blind" magazine and a little less quality wood and finsih.

I lived in Wisconsin for 10 years - never thought of the state as anti-gun (especially compared to the flatlanders just south of WI).

Wisconsin is home to a really big Cabela's in Prarie du Chien - as well as Gander Mountain. (I think Gander is a WI-based chain).

I used to shoot at the city Izaak Walton league trap-shoot on weekends. I really miss it, in fact.

Getting back on topic -- I think the ADL is a reasonably good buy.

Compared to Texas, WI is definitely anti-gun.

Anyway, I passed on the ADL deal. I'm leaning more towards getting myself set up for reloading rather than buy a new rifle right now. Been meaning to get set up for a couple of years, just haven't gotten around to it yet!

IF I change that plan and go for a new gun, it'll be because I ran across a great deal on a used gun that I just can't pass on.

The ADL is a great gun, I have 3 700s, a ADL, SPS, and a CDL and the ADL outshoots both of them. They are built very well and are super durable. The scopes are failry decent. By no means a good scope but they compare with Leupold Riflemans, Nikon Prostaffs etc. They are great for the average hunter on a budget.

Cabela's also has the Weatherby Vanguard package for $549. I'd seriously think about spending the extra $100 and going for that package.
