First 100 yard Flintlock report

Well now, that was fun! I got all dressed up in my gear as its how I will be hunting, with the exception of blaze orange thrown in to be legal... Even though bowhunters run around with us without the orange on

Don't worry fellers, this was just a prop picture, I put on my shooting glasses before I primed and took a shot.

I am shooting my Traditions .50cal 1:48 twist, Mountain Rifle with a French Amber flint wrapped in leather, 70gr Goex 3fg, .020" Bridgers Best patches lubed in Frontier's Anti-Rust and Patch Lube, home cast .490" round balls.

No swabbing was done during the shoot.

The 3 shots are the first 3 shots of the evening. After that, I didn't bother taking pictures as I was playing with pan charges, figuring out if there was another sweet spot or if I had found it already. She loves a heavy dose my 4fg Goex priming powder! 2 1/2 - 3 compression's worth.

Dead center, but quite a bit low. I'll make adjustments later on as I plan to change out the rear sight down the road for a semi buckhorn sight.

Notice my short starter? I picked that up at Rendezvous and during the Mountain Man Survival trail, that's where it was at all times. Tucked in snug between my belt buckle loop so it was easy to get to, yet secure.

Good shooting. There is so much wood around the lock that you could carve some beavertails behind the lock.

There's quite a # of images on that website. Enjoy:

Looks like a lot of fun. Nice shooting and nice hat. Don't let that short starter poke the wrong balls.

Just noticed the horn and bag are on the same side. This is correct for the later period.

In no way will I ever touch that stock until the factory seal is coming off LOL.

I've seen a lot of old target rifles that had this style of lock panel and after seeing that, I gave it a thumbs up and figured, good enough. Its not meant to be period correct, just look the part and be affordable.

BTW Gary, did you get a chance to go to the rendezvous in raton the other week? A friend and I went and had a blast. Good rendezvous. Next year may be even better with the new booshway.

That's great shooting. The best I can do at 100 yards with the open sights is 4" or very slightly under. That's my best.

FrontierGander - I didn't attend Sante Fe Trails Rendezvous at Whittington Center. I should have gone but I just returned from Friendship and the NMLRA National Shoot.

A woman asked me to reacquaint her with flintlocks. Her father (dec.) built about 30 flintlocks and the only one she kept was his replica of Davy Crockett's rifle. She's fired it before but it was decades. We may go to Prator next week (unless she has someplace else she can shoot it at).

BTW, are you interested in joining the Wah Hah Toy Ya Muzzle Loaders?

"In summary, Kentucky rifles of all the periods, share this in common: they were graceful, aesthetically pleasing shooters regardless of their decorative enhancements."

That is a beautiful long gun

Trinidad State has a very nice range with beautiful vistas

That's some mighty fine shooshting. I sure can't manage a group like that at 100 yards. Nice pics too. Thanks for posting

mehavey - he wore glasses when he shot. The posted images without glasses were taken only for photographic purposes.

That's some real good shooting. Some might struggle doing that with a scope.

VERY nice rifle and EXCELLENT group!!

I am one who thinks that getting too hung up on what is "historically correct" can suck the life out of the hobby. I love your kit and could care less if it's "period" or not, you were out there having fun and making smoke which is what REALLY matters!

Frontier I went ahead and bought a Traditions Mountain Rifle, .50 percussion, at Midway USA.com today. They were on clearance for $376.72. Even after shipping the cost was under $390 for a brand new rifle. Nice! Sorry to see that Photobucket has disabled 3rd party hosting, we can't see your beautiful rifle pictures!!

Awesome! I'd love to see those pictures you posted again. I can't wait to get my mountain rifle too, you convinced me and the price was too good to pass up!

Reviews are hard to find for this gun online. It seems you are the only one that pops up on many different sights!

True, There's one review on youtube by gunsamerica which the fool is seriously brain dead and offers zero usable advice. Very uneducated guy in front of the camera.

I plan on doing more video work and pictures.

My percussion model.

Are the sights on these rifles plastic or metal? Someone on another forum said they were plastic. Thanks!
