Most Accurate Pocket Pistol?
Looking for a pocket pistol than can hit a cottontail at 25 Yards.
Thinking the best I can get would be some flavor of Walther PPK but does anyone have any suggestions? |

It ain't just the pistol that needs to be accurate, especially with pocket pistol size.
If that pistol thing doesn't work out, you could try a fishing pole and carrot.

On a gun with a 3" sight radius and a two-finger grip on the frame, I'd think the "Indian" would be all the more important than the "arrow".
I was shooting my SIG P938 at 15-20 yards yesterday, and was extremely happy to be hitting the 8" bull while on the clock; even with no time pressure, I doubt I'd be able to hit a 1" target consistently at 25 yards, though I think the SIG is very accurate.

I think you're on the right track. A fixed barrel is going to be the likely answer.
I'd think a PPK in .32 would work. |

Eh, maybe first see how well you do with perhaps a .22 Ruger or Smith
auto with decent sights or try a snub .38 revolver with fixed sights at 25 yards. You can rent 'em at most indoor ranges. Never been a fan of the PPK though I admit James Bond could outshoot me any day of the week with one. By the way, I hate the recoil of the blowback PPK and its heavy trigger. I won't mention how the slide nips the hand as it flies back in recoil. |

There are guys who can shoot fist sized groups at 25 yards with a J-frame. I'm not one of them. When it comes to pocket pistols, the shooter is the weak link.

With pocket pistols, accuracy is more relegated to how well the shooter can grip the gun. I've never seen a pocket pistol that didn't downsize its grip to something only a child or woman would be comfortable with. The first shot isn't the problem as much as the following shots are.....recoil tends to force the shooter to "re-grip".
The best semi-auto I've found is the Boberg. The reason it out shines others is the grip sits deep into the web of the hand, combined with the bull pup action the recoil is absorbed and controllable for follow up shots. |

The most accurate "pocket pistol" I've ever owned was a Mauser HSc. Trouble is, I could never get the pistol to function reliably enough to depend on for self-defense duties (the primary reason I bought it for). A pity, really, because I liked everything else about the gun.

I would say you are going to want a single action with a super light trigger pull and small in caliber, basically .22 to .32.
Why does it have to be a pocket pistol and not just a smaller-ish pistol?

The two pocket pistols, three actually, that I own that are 25 yard groupers are my S&W M60, PPK & PPK/S (.7.65acp and .380acp). The third, while not a true pocket pistol, is my Kimber Ultra Carry .45acp. All three of these have shot "bunny head", or tighter, groups at 25 yards for me. They are a little more difficult to shoot accurately than similar 4" pistols and revolvers but not as difficult as some would believe. But I have small hands and all these fit me like a glove.

Pocket pistols are intended for up close self defense where accuracy is not an issue. I don't think I would even attempt to shoot a bad guy at 25 yards with my pocket pistol as I would most likely miss and cause him to turn his attention to me. If you want accuracy at 25 yard, use a larger gun.

How big is your pocket? At that range, something like a Ruger SR22, Bersa Thunder 22, or snub revolver in .22lr or .22Mag.

Pretty stiff requirement for a pocket pistol (by most definitions), but not impossible. I would consider a Walther PP in .22 LR to be a good choice, as the choice of ammo includes match grade.

My .02 worth is, just about any pocket pistol will do what you asked about. The question is can you do what you are asking about? Practice, practice, practice

The one you practice most with. Lower calibers/better grip guns will be easier.

I have taken rabbits at that distance and several yards more with a S&W 638 j-frame. Used handloads ranging from 200 grain round nose to 148 rain wadcutter which I had been practicing with a lot. I am positive there are others here that might be able to push the range out a little farther, so it's definitely doable.

Judging from how easy it is to accurately shoot my SIG P938 I'd think a P238 would work for pocket carry. A j-frame can be pretty accurate as well, and if you really want to kick it up a notch get one with an external hammer.

Zorro, a bit big for most pockets, but perhaps accurate out of proportion to their size are the S&W 3914 and 3913 9MM semi-autos. I have .38 Spcl. and 9MM J-Frames too, and agree they are accurate little revolvers. I've seen very good shooting done with a J-Frame, but admit that 25 yards would be tough for me. In this case, it's the shooter, not the gun. I'm pretty sure I could scare Cottontails at 25 yds

S&W made some 2" J frames in .22 with an adjustable rear sight. I expect they are deadly accurate if the shooter can do his part. I once had a 3" Model 36, 2" groups off sandbags no problem but standing on my hind feet was another story. I would try to find the .22 and learn to shoot it. Most of us can't do 2" 25 yard groups off hand with a 6" K-22. You do need adjustable sights.

Guy asks a simple question about hitting a rather large target @ 25 yards & before you know it, he has a bunch of people question his ability to do so! Zorro - I wish I had an answer for you, but, alas the only "pocket pistol" i have in an Erma Excam GT380. Which, btw, is perfectly capable of hitting an empty Coke can @ well beyond 25 yards - - on demand. I wouldn't consider it really a "pocket pistol" though. It's a bit on the heavy side for that. In that class (PPK-PPK/s) & size though, there are some really sweet guns that would probably be extremely capable of the task - - Beretta, CZ (bet cha a Rami could do it easy),the Browning .380 relable of the Beretta Some of the older S&W revolvers in .22 and .32 H&R, I bet one of the new .327 Mag revolvers would do it easy. Heck, I have yet to try out my Ruger LCP, so , I can't say that little thing will do it or not. I'll be sure to give it a try once I drag it out to the range. |

For what you are asking, you need a bigger pocket.

Once upon a time in some European countries, you had to show "good reason" to get a pistol permit. Since general self defense was not a good enough reason, there were pocket pistol shooting matches which let you show justification to own a small gun.
The Walther Model 8 was highly valued for such matches being a rather large 6.35/.25 ACP. Good luck finding one now, though. I think a PP in .22 or .32 would be your best bet in an auto. The S&W Model 34 Kit Gun 2" and 4" .22 or the Model 60 3" .38 with adjustable sights would be even better if you don't mind revolvers. |

I can say without a doubt that a good Walther PP (with a good shooter) will hit a rabbit size target at 25 yards every shot. But only if the rabbit stands still.
