How to stop spammers!

is it possible to stop them. i was thinking that if it was required to make a certain number of posts before being allowed to post a new thread. it wouldn't have to be a large number of posts something like 5 should work. do you guys think something like this would help detour spammers.

10-25 would be better. Real people won't have trouble getting 20 posts.

So the spammers will just post replies rather than new threads. I don't think that will bother them... they're spammers.

Most spammers register, post a new thread (sometimes one in each sub-forum) and never return.

To be honest, spammers aren't that big of a deal. They're annoying as hell, but fairly easy to deal with. Just a few buttons to push and -poof- they're gone. So I'm not sure changing the posting rules would be worth the effort. As Hank mentioned, some of the newcomers start off with a question or an intro thread. I see no reason to hinder that for them.

It was a very good suggestion, maas, but I think it's one of those things where the cure is worse than the disease.

This brings up an interesting point. In most forums I have seen they have a minimum post count to post in the classifieds. Every now and again I browse the classifieds and see how someone has been bilked by someone brand new to the forum. A 25 post minimum seems to deter all but the most determined conmen.

Over on gunsnet they require 50 posts before you can post a link. This keeps away most of the bot spammers. Maybe twice amonth we get a dedicated spammer who gets to teh 50 and promptly gets banned. %0 seems to work well.
