Super redhawk alaskan 454 or 44mag
i think ive narrowed it down, now need to pick a caliber
i am of the opinion that bigger is better. i am concerned with recoil affecting accuracy though. but aside from that, is there really any reason to go with the smaller caliber? is the reliability the same? is 45 colt far and away a better round than 44 special? please feel free to tear apart my stereotypes! |

Well if you actually want the .454, I'd get it. .454 might be a bear in that thing, but you always have the .45LC to fall back on, and that alone can be loaded in a wide variety of power levels.
Here's Jeff Quinn over at Gunblast enjoying a .454 Alaskan:

I have the Alaskan in 454 and love it. Jeff must have been shooting some really hot loads. The reason I went with the 454 is it gave me a much wider range to choose from; the light 45 cowboy action loads, 45 hot loads that are near equal to the 44 mag, then the hotter than hell 454 full power loads. Don't get me wrong, if you put 454 shells in it, everyone on the range will stop and look after your first shot. Corbon has some excellent 45 and 454 rounds if you want to go factory.

Me, I got mine in .44M. The .44M is about my limit for recoil with a short barrel. In fact, it's about my limit on any handgun.
I have found that the .44M is cheaper and easier to get than .45. The .44M can be found just about anywhere, but .454C can be hard to find and is very expensive |

I've got one in .480
I hit one of the 35 yard - self healing targets at the local range, and broke it right in half. They aren't making the .480 anymore but I'm glad i got one, it's awesome. |

I have the Alaskan in the 44 mag as well. There are several very good heavy weight 44 mag cast loads out there, as well as a large selection of all others, all the way down to 44 Special. I think it's a very versatile round in it's own right. jben
