5.56x45mm and .223 Remington????

What is the difference? I've shot both in my AR and thought they were the same thing with a different name? I've shot surplus 5.56 and .223 Remington. Someone today told me that they were two different cartridges that were only slightly different? Am I just ignorant or is it really two different cartridges?
