How do you dress your AR?

Hi everyone,

Saturday, I brought home a RRA LAR-15 Elite Operator with Stand Alone Rear Site.



I've been wanting an AR for a very long time. I thought about a custom build, but didn't know where to start. I've checked out numerous sites, frankly there are so many choices it was confusing. I thought the RRA was nicely eqipped for its price point.

So who's make quality after market accesories?
At this time I have no plans on making major changes. I'm going to shoot it like it is. As I learn the likes and dislike I may make some changes. Or start building another.

For starters I need a good sling and mag loader.
I'm pleased with my iron sights, but I would like some sight options that will help my aging eyes.

It depends on what you want.

For Mag loader, Lula.

For Sling, it depends.
1 point? If you think you will be raiding a building with others. The gun always points at your feet when you drop it.
2 point? If you plan on practicing three positions with sling. for me this is probably the best all around AR sling. I went with a leather one that it like the one on a traditional 1906 with hooks.
3 point? It really works well for my AK underfolder, but I think it gets in the way of the controls on the AR.

They don't talk about brand names but good idea of wear to start.
I think you are right adding a sling & optic/red dot is all you really need.

It's about as dressed out as it gets, other than optics and maybe a tango-down grip or magpul grip, i wouldn't add too much to it.

You got me on the sling. All I know I was missing one. A two point sling, sounds like what I need/want.

I'm basically clueless about the modern AR's. They are leaps and bounds nicer than anything I was ever issued. I was tickled to death, not getting any hot brass in my face at the range yesterday. I remember having to wrap a wool scarf around my face to qualify. It was a better alternative than using a brass deflector that created jams.

You could add a few things:

1. Magpul Grip
2. Tango down stubby grip
3. Bipod (only if you have magnified optics)
4. Tac light
4. Laser

It would look real nice with an aimpoint or a CQB style scope.

I have 2 M&P's that are flat tops similar to yours, only mine just have the rear rail, not the full length. I put YHM flip up irons, and an Eotech 512 on one. The other has some generic irons for now.

There are tons of good aftermarket stuff, just search around and you'll start to develop a game plan. I prefer to keep it simple. I'm not really into all the doo-dads and stuff. My ar with the Eotech is already starting to feel a bit heavy and I'm still wanting some kind of vertical foregrip. After that I'm going to upgrade the trigger, and I'll probably be done.

If accessories are your thing, the platform is wiothout rival. Just figure out what kind of shooting you want to do and what purpose the rifle will serve, then buy the appropriate "lego's".

I have basically that same rifle but with the full quad rail forend....

I added a Hogue pistol grip, and foregrip to the front rail, a flashlight mounted with a 1 inch scope ring to the bottom of the front rail and a Tru-Glo red dot sight.

Although they don't teach the "my way or the highway", it convinced me that a few of the things I was doing were WRONG.

Mine are basic black with black nylon slings and built-in carry handles. No frills, perfect for shooting poodles (5.56 "poodle shooter" chambering).

The sling arrangement is a bit different since I took this picture as I have added a proper GI rear sling swivel rather than the slot that Cav Arms was putting on their buttstock.

But, traditional style 2-point sling, iron sights and an arrangement of 20rd and 30rd mags for either peak capacity or shorter mags for shooting from prone more easily.

I mean if you want to go spend the money just because or you think it looks pretty awesome then go for it but my thinking is why do so unless you really have a need for it.

For a shorty like yours, I like a single point sling, but it totally depends on preference and usage. My first deployment I used a three point sling and loved it. My second deployment I used a one point sling and knew I found the love of my life. For some people, a two point is exactly what they want. I say try them all out and find the one that works best with what you do. You may be surprised.

Oh, and those hogue grips are comfortable, aint they?

It's for cardboard eradication. As I said earlier, all I need is a good sling, and a mag loader. Other than that I believe it's nicely equipped.
I was just curious what products and manufacturer others prefer, since there more manufacturers than are parts on the AR.

I love the grips and the adjustable stock with cheek welds.

Simple and effective. I am going RIS handguard eventually though because I want to go magnified optics with a bipod.

The "tube" is a simple zero magnification cheap red dot zeroed for 100. Eventually from there I'll go EoTech or something like it.

62 grain with 1/9 twist performs very nicely.

Its shocking how quickly an AR can gain weight... Even faster than my ex-wife! My AK feels light and trim in comparison. But accuracy is why i like them. Soo- be careful to check how much a given accessory weighs before buying off the net. When I hold the parts, they always weigh more than I would've guessed. Just sayin.

Another vote for nekkid. Trinkets are for toys, mine's serious social equipment. KISS has served me well but doesn't explain my old duty gun that strangely resembles a late 70's IPSC gun with night sights....it's complicated.
