Where to sell reloading equipment and supplies Chicago Il

All,
I have been doing extensive research and you all seem to be the best and only place for information on reloading. This is my first and probably only post, but I am not sure where else to go. My grandfather passed away and left me all of his reloading equipment and supplies. Nobody in my family reloads. He passed away in California, I moved all the stuff from there to Utah where we lived and then we just recently moved South of Chicago! This stuff is extremly heavy and I do not want to move it again. Can someone please tell me if there are any places that buy this type of stuff and if there are laws regulating selling it in Illinois. As I said I have done so much research and Illinois is sooo strict on guns and stuff. I do not want to ship any of it because there is so much and it would be extremely expensive and I don't know what the laws are for shipping. Barring any places that will buy in bulk, is there a place I can go to identify what all equipment is in these boxes, I know there are a bunch of dies (have no clue what they are) presses, calipers, bullets, casings, primers, cases, trays, but I can't figure out what part goes with what or how to identify them. I have a picture of the stuff and unpacked it covered an entire room in my basement. Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated, if this is the wrong place to put this post, please just tell me where I should put it. I tried to read all the rules before posting, and craigslist in south chicago does not seem to be an option as there is nothing there, don't know if that has to do with the law or what.

p.s. I think he left it all to me because I used to shoot, but with six kids it will be many years before I have time to learn how to reload.

If it is just equipment, e-bay, craigslist, possibly your local paper, and some of these various forums. (Many forums have rules about selling and they vary).

You might also find a local gun shop or club that may sell the stuff on consignment or let you post a for sale sign on a bulletin board

If you also have components like primers and gun powder - that MAY get to be a little more difficult. If you have open containers of powder, sprinkle it sparsely on the lawn for fertilizer

I haven't been able to figure out what to do with all the powder. As for the gun club, I called one in Lockport and he said he would put it all on consignment but that I needed to know what it was and what I wanted for it. Just trying to idenfity some of this stuff has been impossible. Thanks for the suggestions though. I tried to upload a small pic of some of the stuff so you can see what I am talking about.

Unless you really need the money, I would keep the stuff. When all your kids grow up and move away you might want to start reloading. How cool would it be to start out on Grampas old setup? I always hear about people getting rid of this sort of thing and regretting it later.

You have some treasures. Your grandpa had good taste and spent the money for some very high quality tools that will sell but for a loss. It would be quite costly to replace it later. It's yours now, to sell if you wish but if you, or any of the six kids or anyone else in your family ever has an interest in shooting/reloading, you could live to regret it! "Years" will pass quickly.

Sure some of it's really heavy but there's not a lot of bulk to store. Pack it in boxes small enough to be easily handled and stack it up in a coolish, dry place, heaviest boxes on the bottom of course.


None of the components are hazardous to store, including the powder, but keep everything in the original containers.

Holy cow it's the mother lode! If you do any shooting at all, I'd keep quite a bit of that and take up reloading if you can do so legally. Not saying keep everything, but just the basics like the press, tumbler dies etc. If he willed the stuff to you, it would honor him to at least keep and use it.

My friend's mother passed a couple years ago. She kept an old j-frame under her bed for protection. It was her husbands BUG, being the Police Chief of that town for a number of years. It took a lot of arguing and paperwork (coming from NJ) but it sits in my safe now and I wouldn't even consider selling it.

I completely understand where you are coming from with sentimental value, but you would have to understand my grandpa...he was 95yrs old and he was hoping I would marry a 'real' man even though I have been married to the same schoolteacher for 15 years and we have six kids. I haven't seen too many forums for female reloaders! No chance that my husband will ever get into it!

here are two more views, can anyone provide me with info on how I can locate information on the presses? I looked on RCBS but cannot tell which ones are which, the are all called different things.

you could sell everything individually on http://www.gunbroker.com/ . Look at the site and see how the items are listed. That would get you the best price for each item.

If you don't care about the money, you could take all of the stuff to a local gun club and give it away by leaving it there (with permission) with a note that says "Free to a good home."

The option of taking it all to a gun store to sell on consignment seems to be hanging up on the need to get an inventory and not knowing what it is that you are looking at. I would think that most of the stuff would have some identiying markings. But, I understand that there may be a lot of parts that go together but you don't know which goes with what. People on this forum could help identify a few items from pictures, but you have so much stuff that it would overwhelm us and the site to try to sort it all out here.

It seems that what you need is a local reloader that would be willing to help you out, maybe for some of the stuff. Somebody on the forum might live near you and be willing to help. Maybe some helpful sole here will PM you. But, I live 1000 miles from you, so it can't be me.

By the way, there are some "real men" that teach school. They don't HAVE to shoot guns. But, they are missing out on some fun if they don't.

Holy HELL, that makes my set-up look.... well, Pathetic! It's a shame you aren't into shooting or reloading, because you have a top-notch set of equipment for it.

If you insist on selling it, I'd suggest RIGHT HERE parted out or even in mix & match packages. Anyone who would buy, would also pay to have it shipped. Another alternative already mentioned would be eBay, even though I hate to recommend that left-coast anti-everything organization. Then there is gunbroker.com... That would be MUCH better than ebay, but may not fetch as much. Take an inventory, check numbers on things (dies, punches, etc), and list. Anyone who does this knows what they're looking for and what they're looking at. You're sitting on a reloader's goldmine!


If you're giving away, I'd like my place in line!! I can always make room for more equipment!

Go to a local gun club and have a senior member look at and help you ID the items. Just by glancing at the photo, it looks like he had some top notch equip. A couple of those die sets look like Redding competition series, over $200.00 each. If you want to spend the time on E-Bay, people are going crazy spending there now.

Expect to be paid well for the dies that say Redding. I am assuming some are bushing dies because I see a box of bushings laying there. Super expensive dies. If you must sell, I would like to see what calibers you have. PM me.

As others have posted that is quite a lot of big ticket items. If you take the time to research the actual equipment parts, die, presses etc. and get a idea of what they are worth you could end up with a nice amount of cash. If not someone is liable to offer you pennies on the dollar and you will get ripped off. As a whole most gun owners/reloaders are great people but there are some that are less than honest.

Just thinking, if I listed everything together in the local paper for $750.00, but they have to agree to take everything, would that be fair? I looked on line and you can get a basic reloading kit for $300 and there is probably 5 times more equipment and supplies than that...

and Gunbroker.com to get an idea of what some of those items are going for. The cases and bullets are not the most expensive items you have there. One of the presses looks like an RCBS progressive model, and they have been going for ridiculous prices on E-bay recently. And, the dies could also be significant $.

You could probably sell the whole lot to somebody for $750, or even more, because he would then turn around and sell it piece-by-piece for a profit on e-bay. There are a lot of people doing that these days. You can tell, because they have never used the items and can't answer questions about them when you ask.

It all really comes down to how much time YOU want to put into getting money out of the stuff. Unless you are in a hurry for some reason that you haven't mentioned, I suggest that you take your time and work your way through the process at a pace that allows you to make the maximum $. Taking the time to find a knowledgeable and helpful person could really increase your return.
