what are the steps to get a silencer ?

Hello All,

I was looking into getting a sliencer for my remington 700PSS (already has a threaded barrel) in .308 and was looking for some suggestions on brands to look for and which to avoid. ( would like to keep it around 800 with the tax stamp)

Also what are the steps to getting one (I know you have to pay the tax and get some forms signed, but not sure which forms and who signs). I live in SD and it has pretty open gun laws. Also what would be some good reasons to get one if I was asked by the LEO or BATF. I was thinking noise suppression while shooting at the range or when varmint hunting.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Step one: Find a good local Class3 dealer.
Step two: Pay the nice man for the suppressor and he will get the paperwork started.
Step Three: Go get fingerprinted
Step four: Fill out the Form4 and take it to your Chief Law Enforcement Officer for him to sign
Step five: Send the Form4 and fingerprint cards and a $200 check to the BATFE
Step six: Wait 6-10 weeks for BATFE to approve your Form4
Step seven: When your dealer calls to tell you that he has received your approved Form4, do a happy dance, then calmly drive to his store and pick up your new prized posession.

The only thing I ever put in the space on the F4 about reason to own is: Collection/Investment/Recreation

Thanks for the info. now anybody know a class 3 ffl in South Dakota? I know mine local gunsmith is not one.

Some states have specific game laws against using NFA devices for hunting.

great tick list!.......dont forget to include:

- fingerprints *must* be made onto FBI cards, not local LEO ones
- passport type photos (2x) must be affixed to Form 4
- Form 5330 (self declaration of US citizenship) must be completed
- use new West Virginia address

- be aware that local dealer may add a little service charge to deal with
the paperwork. shop for this as well and negotiate it beforehand.

- do NOT make the mistake of printing each page onto different sheet.
print your F4 back-to-back

Thanks for the extra info. got a bunch of the fingerprint cards laying around. REquested the forms for a C&R ffl awhile ago and they sent it to me 5 different times, so I got extra fingerprint cards to spare. Thanks for the update on the new address.

Now any recommendations on silencers for 7.62 rifles? Good, bad, ugly?

Funny, I've heard this before. Fingerprints ARE NOT required for C&R. I didn't get any cards with mine and I got the license just fine.

nice looking gun. How much did the sound quiet down? Did the silencer affect acuracy? Put a muzzlebreak on the 7.62 and acuracy past 500 yards was affected noticeably beyond what I would call acceptable and i took it off and accurcay came back instantly.

It can be fired without hearing protection safely. You still get the supersonic crack, but not much can be done about that (unless you give up energy and range and go with subsonic) ammo. The groups tighted a bit with the addition of the can. It does change the POI so I just always shoot with the can mounted. The POI is very repeatable from one session to the next -- I always take the can off the gun to clean it etc and do not store the can on the gun.

I suppose this would be the place to ask. Is the HTG Universal II a good suppressor? It got a good review in "Special Weapons" (IIRC) and the ability to shoot everything from 22 Long Rifle to .223 and have good suppression on both seems like a very good deal since I only need to have one 22 caliber can. For $477 it seems like a good deal when it takes the place of two suppressors. (Even better when you tack the $200 tax onto it.)

Only bad thing I can think of about that .22/.223 can is that it weighs more than 3 times what my Outback weighs. That would be mighty front-end heavy on a pistol. Other than that it looks like a good thing...

Good point. I plan on using it mostly on rifles so that won't be a serious problem. I was going to use it mainly on my 10/22 and I want to buy a .223 rifle sometime in the future. Got the local Class II number on my gunsafe for when I am ready.
