I've looked at the 300 RUM... I've come to the conclusion that my .300 Weatherby loaded with 200 grain accubonds at just a hair over 3000 fps is all I need in a .300 mag rifle... If I want more horsepower it will be something in the .338 class such as the .340 weatherby or 338-378..

The .300 Win Mag will be kinder to your shoulder.

It will be plenty for most anything.

Your barrels will last much longer.

Ammo is way cheaper.

You'll sell your .300 Rem Ultra Mag.

I have a friend with a .30-.378 Weatherby. Brutal.

I have the RUM

I bought it when they first came out. There was no brass available so I bought 4 boxes of loaded Remington with 180 gr. Noslers. I was very surprised at the accuracy off the bench. Right at 1" 3-shot groups at 100 yds. I was also surprised at the chronographed speeds, published to be 3300 fps. They averaged around 3290 out of my rifle and 3304 out of my hunting partners rifle. My rifle is the standard blued, wood stock with open sights. It has a 3.5-10 Zeiss Conquest in QD mounts.

I was also surprised at how absolutely miserable it was to shoot off the bench.

Since there was no published loads when I got the rifle I called Nosler and was given a load from a tech. rep that was for their 180 gr. bullet using RL-25 powder and did get similar to factory ammo results.

Now, a little closer to the OP question: I do not have a 300 Win Mag but I do have a 300 H&H mag. On all occasions except extremely long ranges that is the rifle I take. I think if I had it to do over again and did not own any 300 magnum type rifles I would just buy a 300 win mag.

But alas, I really do like the original FN Mauser action Weatherby's in 300 magnum.......................

My 300 H&H is a pre-64 Mod. 70 but I think I will leave it alone. To have one done by the man himself would be great. When you say "punched out" I assume you mean the original winchester barrel is still on the rifle? That would be something.

Original barrel marked .300 H&H is still on it.. The collector value is gone, but it sure is a shooter.. I am the second owner, the original owner passed in 2005, killing at least 40 elk with it and according to his kids at least 2 times that many deer..
