Mossburg 500 Slugster

Just got a Mossburg 500 Slugster from my dad, he gave it to me. He bought it in a package deal from a pawn shop. Paid $400 for this gun, a generic (can't remember the name) USA made 20 gauge that looks very similar to a Mossburg, and a Savage 110 30-06. He got a steal of a deal, the pawn shop just wanted them gone. My Mossburg is a 12 gauge with a 24 inch barrel. I own several different actions of shotguns, this is my first pump. Anything I need to know about this gun?

Read the owner's manual. If one didn't come with the gun, download it from Mossberg.

Before shooting slugs, get a real good recoil pad and maybe a thick shoulder pad, too.

I'm not too worried about recoil. I'm sure 1 or 2 of my guns have more recoil. And I've shot a 12 gauge slug with a pistol grip, nothing major. I've got a 10 gauge Stevens, it's got some kick.

What I'm wanting to know is common problems with the gun.
I'm not new to guns, or shotguns, just new to pumps. My shotguns include single shots, revolving cylinder, double barrels, and even a bolt action.

Someone just called me a wimp!
Oh well.
The plastic safety switch can break and leave you walking.
The mail order houses sell a steel replacement, so it wouldn't hurt to get one, just in case.
