.45 options

I've had a .45 on my list for a while, but I got to thinking about it last night and am having second thoughts of what to get.

I wanted one with a threaded barrel and taller sights for suppressor use and the two that I was looking at were the S&W M&P 2 and a Walther PPQ. Here's the rub: I currently don't live in a state where suppressors are legal to own, but I do plan to be moving in the future to a state where they are.

So, I don't need a threaded barrel .45 right now and thus I could get a used .45 on the cheap that doesn't have one and get a threaded barrel later.

Glock would be the obvious answer here, threaded barrels easily available and cheap, but I'm not interested in another Glock, got two already and am planning on a 10mm G40MOS in the future.

Other options would be the Ruger SR45 or American, but I don't think threaded barrels are available for those, correct? Then I thought 1911 and threaded barrels are available for those, but 1911's are generally pricey unless they're a Rock island.

Hi Point is coming out with 9mm's that have options for threaded barrels and higher capacity mags, so they may come out with a .45 in the future with similar specs.

Thoughts?

I just bought a Kahr p45 for 450.00 last week and will pick it up on Monday (CA ten day waiting period). From all I've read, this is a solid choice for a lightweight polymer .45 that has good reliability, DAO type trigger, no nonsense simplicity of controls, and accurate polygonal walthar barrel.
FWIW, I already have a Kahr PM9 and k40, so very familiar with the trigger action and platform.

But I noticed that you are fixated on threaded barrels, so Kahr does not offer this option, and there are NO aftermarket barrels offered for any of the Kahr pistols due to their patented off centered feeding ramp.

Faxon is making threaded barrels for the 9mm M&P 2.0’s, i would bet the 45’s would be coming soon.

That would be my plan. Pick up a 2.0 in .45. Get a threaded barrel when the time is right.

Yeah, I want to have the option of a threaded barrel for the future and at 7 rds capacity, I'd rather just get a Rock Island or other cheap 1911, upgrade the parts over time, and get the threaded barrel after I get a suppressor.

Exactly, the OP can buy a "value priced" 1911 and get a on sale threaded barrel for it.

You could get an XDM 45. Some come with the taller sights and threaded barrel already.

HK USP .45, unless you are stuck on having a striker fired pistol. Of all my .45's (and I have 14 at current count), the HK is the smoothest shooting.

The FNX-45 (I have the tactical) is best .45 ACP that I own. It is not easy to conceal but it is doable. I have a beautiful Colt Combat Commander (Series 70) which is also a great shooter but high maintenance. Having said all that, an ATI 1911 (Series 70 Colt pattern) is very affordable, well made and a great shooter as well. We have one in 9mm, Commander size) one in .45acp, also Commander size) and one full size. If you aren't looking to spend a ton of money, give these a try.

I would pass on the Officer size unless you are prepared to modify a Kimber recoil spring as the factory one is not the best. It's not hard but probably needed. Their Fat boys don't have a good reputation.

If I were looking at .45 autos, Id look at Colt 1911's, SIG P220's, or the Glock 21's.

Im not a big fan of 1911's that arent Colts, and had my share of trouble with the copies over the years. The Colts were always worth the premium they brought.

That said, I picked up a High Standard copy earlier this year, and its been a good shooter. Its more or less a basic GI gun, nothing fancy, but its been reliable and shoots well. I think I paid around $350 for it.

Ive owned a number of SIG P220's over the years, and they are great guns. And as much as I like the 1911's, I think a 220 would be my choice over them.

I currently have a Glock 21SF that came with a factory threaded barrel and suppressor sights. I dont have a 45 caliber suppressor and Im still on the fence about getting one, but if I do, its all set. I also have a Glock 30S. Both are good shooters and have been trouble free.

As much as I like the 1911's and 220's, the Glocks would be my choice these days.

I have been carrying a Sig P227 SAS carry Gen2 since November 2018. Before that I carried a Sig P239 in 9mm. IMHO the P227 carries just as easily as the P239 did for me.

If you want to go somewhat economical you can fit a threaded barrel to a Ruger SR1911. The Remington 1911 R1 Enhanced has an optional threaded barrel. Or you could go with a Sig P220.

(Note: This is not my area of expertise. I've never had much interest in "quieteners.")

FNX is nice, but it's too much $

Basic , full sized 1911 , manufacturer of your choice .
Every shooter should have at least one of the original , John M. Browning designed pistols , so you will understand why they sell and why every maker tries to make one just like it....
Nothing works better for combat .
Never own one and you will never know what you are missing .

Not the best for concealed carry...but in a gunfight , a 1911 and two magazines will see you through. If not call in a rifle squad .

Upon further consideration, unless Hi Point hurries up with a .45 with a threaded barrel, it's either going to be a Glock or an M&P. The 1911 I'd look at getting would be a Rock Island and IDK how well a cheap 1911 that was clearly not made with the intention of being shot with a suppressor will work with an aftermarket barrel and can on it.

I'll think about the USP, I'm not a big HK fan, but when I found out they're DA/SA that intrigued me, I love DA/SA.

I don't really have a need for any .45ACP pistols (I do own a few 1911s), but if I were to grab another for the heck of it - maybe a used USP-45.

I know you said you're not interested in another Glock. But a suppressed .45 Glock seems ideal to me. Simple, solid, utility! The barrel options alone make it seem like a good choice. Plus, you could pick up a used one, since you'll likely change the barrel anyway, and all that $ saved can go straight into the slush fund for the overpriced and overregulated can.

If you're going to spend a bunch of money (upwards of $1,000) on a tax stamp, suppressor and threaded barrel it doesn't make any sense to go and buy a $150 Hi Point or the cheapest 1911 out there as the host.

Buying a cheap 1911 and then upgrading the parts over time is either going to end up costing a lot more than a decent 1911 upfront or is just going to be a cheap 1911 with a mish mash of parts.

My FNX-45 is excellent. It has digested literally thousands of rounds, including every type of factory ammo I could find, and many different reloads, and has never stumbled once. The OP could buy a standard FNX and add the barrel and sights as needed.

Look for a decent STI Spartan V 1911, if you can find a decent one for close to what they went for new while they were still making them(@$650) you’ve got yourself a nice piece.

My FNX-45 is one of my favorite “toys!” I liked it so much, I went and got an FNX-9 too. Mine is not a tactical version, so the price was not high at all considering the quality. And, as has already been pointed out, you can always look to getting a threaded barrel later if desired.
