IMR Powder Concerns - Page 2

Been shooting a 270 for many, many, years. Tried them all. (powders) Found nothing better fits my application than 4350. Don't care to use 4831 in my 270. Stuff just kicks to hard for my liking at the speed I prefer for my 270 cartridges. Than again 4831 is my powder of choice for my 243 and 25-06. So you see its not the powders you (think) are best to keep on hand for generic reasons. Choose powders that work the best in each application concerning (your particular) weapon/s. Just a little advice and my humble opinion tonight is all..

Over the years I switched over to H-4350 for the 270/30-06 just get little better load density vs IMR-4350 plus shoot pretty good in those rifles.

I really appreciate all the opinions/advise. I ordered some powder yesterday, (4831 & 4350) and plan on trying them out. I may take a look at the WW760/H414 for experimenting down the road. Again, thanks for all the input. I make a note to get back on my results. Take care.

I like 4350 (and in 270 as well as 30-06).

However, 4831 works equally well by most accounts.

Either one is fine. 4350 is harder to meter I believe (I just got some 4831 and I think its SC but would have to look, I have one rifle that did not like the 190s with 4350 and am going to try the 4831 with them.

Same gun like the 168s with 4350 so.......

My brother tried the WW760 and did not like the results. We shoot cold weather and may be a factor, but definitely not one on our list again. Accuracy seems eratic and its dirty (30-06 in 150-175 gr bullets).

Not a clue on the H414

I use IMR 4831 in my .280 with 160 gr grand slams and IMR 4350 with 140's
My .300 Weatherby Mag love IMR 4831 with 180's

When I had my coveted .270 decades ago, I asked Sierra Bullets' ballistic tech what powder he used to get best accuracy with that round testing all their .270 bullets. His answer was IMR4350 for 130 and heavier bullets, IMR4064 for anything lighter. He did say a bit higher muzzle velocity with 4831 was normal, but it never produced the accuracy the other two did; especially with the lighter bullets. He preferred 40% smaller test groups than 50 to 75 fps faster bullets. And that no ball powder was good for best accuracy.
