Pro-Shot Cleaning Rod

I purchased a Pro-Shot cleaning rod. What is the purpose of the brass piece that slides up and down the length?

As always, many thanks.

That is a muzzle guard for protecting the muzzle if you can't clean from the chamber end.

Yup! Muzzle guide. A must for my M1, parked out of the way for my Model 70. If you are cleaning from the muzzle you may also want a rod stop, which I also use when cleaning the M1.
