That would require about 1800 fps from a 1 oz. slug. Pretty stiff load.

A quick look and I found that Federal claims one of their 3" 12-ga 1-1/4 oz slugs delivers 1600 FPS and 3109 ft/lbs. Ouch!

It's not just ft lbs - a hard cast Dixie IXL DGS .730" 870 grain hard cast at 1,200 fps "only" develops 2,783 ft lbs out of a 20" barrel but there is no better or more devestating current production slug available anywhere on the earth. The Brenneke 3" Black magic will hit 3,000 ft lbs plus but it ain't no Dixie and it is not hard cast. It ain't all about ft lbs.

The Brennekes may not be as hard as the Dixies, but they are harder than most production slugs...and extremely effective.

These aren't just high Brinel lead they are a hard alloy metal. My guess would be a tungsten compound. at 32 grams per projectile for the monolits (32 g = 1.12876 oz), that's a bunch of whoopass.

They are made of steel. Not very dense and smaller meplat, but assume they work well. Still the Dixie weighs two ounces and is .730" diameter and is the king of the hill. I don't think the new Buffalo Bore slugs will change that but I expect the new Buffalo Bore to be like most everything else they do, big and bad.

While alot can be learned by reading, it is pale in comparison to real world experence. I would really like to build a 12 bore rifle from a Winchester model 12 but I cant find anyone who will build a custom rifled barrel. That being said I have only shot one animal with a 12 guage slug. It was a yearling mule deer that had been hit by a car and needed a humane death. I shot her a 3' between the eyes. She didnt even blink. There was a 3/4" hole leaking blood but absolutely no reaction to the shot. She needed a second shot. So much for the awesome knockdown power od 3100 foot pounds of energy. That being said this is only ONE experence. I would really like to aquire more field experence with a 12 guage slug. Maybe someday.

Actually its 6200 ft/lbs if you let both barrels go at the same time- reason African White hunters use it on follow up work- but this is for point blank shooting- rapidly loses at any distance.

I believe Hubel 458 is way over 10,000 ft lbs with some of his loads in his SFH thread. In fact, I believe he is over 20,000 ft lbs with some of his loads as a .50 BMG gets close to 15,000 ft lbs and he is beyond that.

Axcept they would cost $20 per shot minimum... and kick butt on the back as much as the front... I was thinking these...

...in a full tungsten construction pushed by a hot and heavy load of powder would be "severe duty" and surpass the numbers on about every other shotgun loading. They would likely sell like hot cakes in 3 and 3 1/2 inch if located in the pistolgrip, breacher choke, mag extender and heat shield aisle of the local LEO (cuz mall ninjers like LEO stores since they are practically a copper and all) and mall ninjer store...
